9 year old set up a LinkedIn account!

Seriously, me and DH realised madam had done this, this evening. We've spoken to her about using the internet and have told her how disappointed we are that she misused our trust.

On one hand I feel it's sort of interesting of all social media she sets an account up on LinkedIn rather than something else! On the other hand how do I get over how dangerous the internet and social media can be?

Any links to keeping safe online gratefully accepted.

You lost me at madam.

Blackbear19 · 07/07/2020 19:59

I'm surprised LinkedIn don't have a minimum age.
I think I'd contact them.

I think you also need to review your internet settings if she could get on there that easily.

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 07/07/2020 20:07

We've contacted LinkedIn cancelled the account and will totally look at our internet settings. She's also not allowed on the internet without one of us present.

Does LinkedIn not need you to confirm an email address to set up an account? That seems like a flaw in their system.

I guess I'm quite impressed that a 9 year old has even heard of LinkedIn never mind managed to get through an account set up process, you have to admire that

CormoranStrike · 07/07/2020 21:13

What did she state was her job?

Ohnoherewego62 · 07/07/2020 21:15

What are her skills and previous work experience Wink

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 07/07/2020 22:18

She only got as far as her work experience and she added her actual school. She also used her school email. Think I'll need to mention it to them as when I spoke to her further she said she'd had an email enabling the account which she'd accepted and then deleted. So she sort of knew what she was doing.

I know as parents we should have had a better eye on her internet use, but I thought her school email was pretty safe.

Big lesson for us to keep more of an eye on here. No excuse for school emails now as she won't need any contact after a week on Friday when they finish for the summer.

Must have been a shock OP- maybe she wanted to emulate you or her dad, if you use LinkedIn?

She'll probably be running Deutsche Bank in 15 years Grin

My 9 yo has his school and personal emails. His own was needed to set him up with a child profile for Google family link or something.

So depending on the device she is using if its android set up Google family link. We have complete control over what websites he can access.
If she is using a Microsoft device then again look at the child/ family settings. Own profile and pre approved websites.

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 07/07/2020 22:46

Thank you @Blackbear19 we'll do that in the morning.

She's obviously taken on board what we've said as she's not settled tonight and has just got into bed with me! DH has gone to the spare room.

I think this is the first time we've experienced one of DCs knowing more than us (which to be fair should have happened years ago!)

As far as seeing me and DH on LinkedIn, yes I think that's where it stems from. She's aware of social media but we definitely had a conversation a week or so ago about my bil being on LinkedIn as he doesn't usually have a social media presence and I think that's where it's come from.

I had to discuss linkedIn with our 9 year old as it came preloaded on his android phone. We went through all the apps on there and explained which he could use (2 of them) and which he couldn’t. It I’ve now got google family installed so I know what he’s using (oh and I have great fun locking it when he backchats me!)

Aquamarine1029 · 07/07/2020 22:57

LinkedIn! Sorry, but that's hilarious. She sounds very ambitious! Grin

BaronessBomburst · 07/07/2020 23:05

Does she have a Motorola? LinkedIn comes pre-installled and links with the email address active on the phone.

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 07/07/2020 23:08

She's hasn't got a phone. She's been using my Mac during lockdown for school work, stupidly on my behalf when they've had something online to watch, set by school she's gone into another room so I can concentrate on my work. Obviously they won't be happening from now.

Haha, this made me smile and reminded me of DS who when he was 4(!) ordered a white board from the school equipment supplier. 😆

He went on the supplier's website and put the school name in for delivery but his name as the person to accept it. Think he'd only been there about a month at the time.

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/07/2020 00:12

My ds tried to order a model railway from eBay. Not a Hornby train set, but one of those ones you sit astride that you sometimes see in parks.

Blackbear19 · 08/07/2020 08:16

I have no clue about child settings for a mac. But they must have something.

My guess is it will be similar to Microsofts you need to set them up with their own profile.

These things are a must, nobody can look over their childs shoulders 24hrs per day.
