How do I clean a tapestry chair?

I've inherited a tapestry chair, it's quite old (at least 15 years) and is looking dirty. How can I clean the tapestry fabric without ruining it. Ps, having a Nanna chair is the best thing ever :-)

Tapestry as in canvas and wool or fabric that looks like tapestry?

There used to be a product called Thawpit, sort of dry cleaning fluid in a little bottle with a pad in the opening and you could rub it gently over stains to clean them.

Other possibilities
Carpet shampoo type stuff on a damp cloth and dab/wipe gently
Actual carpet shampoo in an aerosol
Dry hair shampoo
Very dilute soap solution on cloth that is just about damp ie nearly dry

I think that it's material to look like tapestry but I don't know. Would your suggestions work on this?

Should do.

You could always ask in a furniture shop for cleaning tips. If all else fails, on a part that doesn't show use a bit of meths on something like an old white sheet or handkerchief.
