Relocating to Rotherham or surrounding areas

We will be relocating to Rotherham, or one of the surrounding areas in a couple of months.

Does anyone have any advice as to areas that are nice and safe for families to live in please?

Also I have a very active 9yr old boy. Can any give me some advice as to what's available in the area for him to do please? Sports clubs, Cubs or other things.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

do you have any idea of an area yet? will you need to commute anywhere? and if buying do you have a budget?

@Digger2 whereabouts in Rotherham will you need to be near to? For such a small place, there are a wide variety of areas. I live in a semi rural village which is fabulous in terms of activities etc - Brownies, small swimming pool at the school, after school club, holiday club etc but there is only a bus every 90 minutes until 6pm then nothing! So it really depends on what you need to be near.

Wickersley, Whiston, Thorpe Hesley, Wentworth all nice areas with good travel links although pricier for houses I would think. You will get more for your money in places like Kimberworth or herringthorpe although you would need to be careful as some parts of these areas are quite run down sadly. School wise I believe all these areas have decent schools.
I'm originally from Rotherham (kimberworth) and all my family are still there, I'm not blind to its faults-and there are a few! but I still miss it almost 21 years after leaving.

@EmuBea @dawnc27 @seashell80 Thank you for commenting. I will be working in Rotherham town centre but don't mind a bit of a commute of say anything up to 30 minutes.

As for houses we'll be looking to rent initially so am fairly flexible on the budget. I didn't want to live in the centre of Rotherham so anywhere on the outskirts or surrounding areas would be good as long as I'm a little closer to the countryside.

Thanks for your help.

@Digger2 luckily in Rotherham you don't have to go too far to get to countryside!

As mentioned up thread, Wentworth, Thorpe Hesley, Wickersley etc are all lovely. Not too much in the way of rentals though in those areas - you might need to look at places like Woodlaithes Village / Bramley / parts of Kimberworth, Aston etc.
