Not bothering with a bra during lockdown

NemesiaPinkLagoon · 07/07/2020 11:06

There's a fashion piece in the Guardian about a decline in bra wearing during lockdown.

I'm interested to know thoughts on this! Has anyone stopped wearing their bra and found it a revelation?

I always feel sloppy and undressed without a bra, and don't find it very comfortable with quite large boobs (E cup). I'm breastfeeding at the moment and wear nursing bras with pads to handle leaks.

I don't know if I would ever feel comfortable going braless regularly (breastfeeding aside) but how much is that because of societal expectations I wonder? I very rarely shave my legs or underarms because I don't like using my free time doing that, and I am not much bothered any more about what others think of that. Maybe similar in terms of choices.

I've hardly worn a bra because if I'm not leaving the house I'm in my pyjamas. But even in normal times as soon as I'm in I'm straight in the shower and in to my pyjamas.

I never wear a bra at home , maybe a string top with support or a crop top type thing , I actually found it really helped with my shoulder and back pain. It felt quite weird at the start but after a while my body got used to it. I now hate that strapped in feeling that comes with a bra

gotothecooler · 07/07/2020 11:11

I think the problem is people wearing badly fitted bras in the first place. I often read about how much more comfortable people are without a bra, and the relief when they get home and can take theirs off. I just sit scratching my head really because I can't relate. I feel much more comfortable with my bra.

I started wearing crop tops more instead of underwires but a few weeks ago noticed my back and shoulders getting achey so I switched back to underwires and feel fine again, my clothes hang better and look better. I will save the crop tops for yoga or lazy days from now on, proper bras again for me now.

BlingLoving · 07/07/2020 11:15

I have large breasts but they are quite perky. I have not been wearing a bra at home at all. Mostly I wear very tight stretchy vests under my clothes. If I'm going to be in close proximity to people, I'll usually put a bra on but if I'm wearing a jacket/jumper or am just popping out, I haven't bothered mostly. I think this is quite similar to before, the difference is that the times I was just popping out v briefly and not seeing people were much fewer than now. Most of my trips out of the house are a quick walk of the dog or a trip to Sainsbury's. I'm not meeting friends for coffee, or spending hours in town browsing shops or whatever.

ProbablyFault · 07/07/2020 11:20

I've bought a few really nice crop tops over lockdown, and I'm about to get rid of all of my underwired bras - they're expensive, it's difficult to find nice plain ones, and they're not even that comfortable. I have small boobs though.

NemesiaPinkLagoon · 07/07/2020 11:20

@gotothecooler that's how I feel too. I always make sure they fit well when I buy new bras, and see it as something worth spending a bit of money on to feel good in. Lucky to have the cash for that, I know.

But am attracted by the idea of freedom and shunning the idea that it's bad to have saggy boobs! Haha!

I don't wear a bra at home ever. I just find them very uncomfortable and have used the bra or bust method.

Enchantmentz · 07/07/2020 11:23

I usually go from spring to August/end of summer with rarely wearing a bra so this is pretty much my norm. At any other time If I have no plans and I am staying at home then I won't wear one then either. My bras are comfortable so that isn't the reason why I don't wear them.

Never been big breasted, currently 30ff which isn't that big so don't sag or weigh me down in any way.

DreamingofSunshine · 07/07/2020 11:23

I've worn a bra throughout, I'm an F cup and saggy so need the support! But I've also dressed normally in lockdown- well normal for me so jeans or denim skirt and a top or jumper.

Clumsyduck · 07/07/2020 11:26

@gotothecooler

I’m exactly the same ! Iv always said this ! I find not wearing a bra So uncomfortable . With a bra on I can’t really feel like my boobs are there If that makes sense but without one they just feel heavy and start to ache Confused I don’t have massive boobs and they are reasonably “perky” so i genuinely don’t understand how others find it so comfy I’d go as far as to say I hate the feeling of no bra on . I even sleep in one most the time !!

Bluntness100 · 07/07/2020 11:30

I also think people who find them uncomfortable are wearing the Wrong size. Generally I think it’s the back strap is too tight and digs into them. I recall one poster saying if it didn’t dig in and cause marks it wasn’t the right size. Which was so wrong it was unbelievable.

A good fitting bra is not uncomfortable. A poor fitting one is

Fatted · 07/07/2020 11:38

I've also wondered this. I've never understood the whole 'taking my bra off at the end of the day' thing. I am much more comfortable with my bra on. I even sleep in mine. I do wonder how many people are wearing the wrong size or even the wrong shape or style. I've ditched padded bras and I find unpadded more comfortable than padded ones.

I'd say make up has fallen by the wayside. I do tend to dress more casual now too, but not staying in my PJs all day every day.

gamerchick · 07/07/2020 11:45

I don't find them uncomfortable but don't wear them in the house.

I couldn't imagine sleeping in them. Do they ever come off to wash?

LolaColaMola · 07/07/2020 11:48

I never wear a bra at home, take it off as soon as I get it and put it back on to go out if I need to. It's so uncomfortable but even though I'm massively fat, I'm only a B cup so they don't feel heavy/achy. Although saying that, I'd never go out without one on as although they're small they are miles apart and my nipples would stick out BlushGrin

AwkwardAsAllGetout · 07/07/2020 11:49

Nope. It much more comfortable in mine. I agree that people who don’t find them comfy are probably wearing the wrong size or shape. I’ve worked out what fits me just right and have many many colours of the same brand and style. At £40 a pop I expect them to last. I bought a different one from John Lewis to wear for a wedding last year and it was excruciating, it really cut into my shoulders. I’ve been quite strict with myself in lockdown though, in an attempt to keep up some normality, I’ve been getting dressed, make up on everyday just as in normally do, regardless of if we’re just staying in. I think it’s affect my mental health negatively if I didn't tbh, it would feel like giving up.

Clumsyduck · 07/07/2020 11:49

No Iv never taken it off ! Grin

Yeah of course I change to clean bras and I don’t wear one in the shower or on the rare occasion my single self gets some action these days haha But other Than that it’s Bra on !!

Marketgarden · 07/07/2020 11:52

An observation- I have seen more women out and about when shopping who are braless.

WendyHoused · 07/07/2020 11:53

Hate the damned things, glad to be rid of them for as long as this lasts.
My jiggly bits are much more comfortable.

Waiting42021 · 07/07/2020 11:54

I have fairly average sized boobs, not small but not huge.

I can wear a bra all day and forget that I’m wearing it, but I do like to take it off when I get home. As a PP said, I hate the ‘strapped in’ feeling. Similarly, I can never relax around the house in jeans.

Sojo88 · 07/07/2020 11:55

I agree with others, I'm much more comfortable wearing a bra!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 07/07/2020 12:11

My bra fits really well so I find it as comfortable to wear one as not. Last year I sprained my wrist quite badly and couldn't do up my bra, I also couldn't drive so wasn't leaving the house so it wasn't much of an issue, however I eventually had to get my DH to do it for me as I got quite a nasty under-boob rash. So I have been wearing a bra during lockdown, except on pyjama days, to avoid another rash issue.

Zippetydoodahzippetyay · 07/07/2020 12:12

@gotothecooler I feel the same as you. More comfortable wearing a bra. Though I was a D cup before children and now, while nursing my 3rd baby am wearing an H cup. For me, it's not about how they look or about society's expectations but rather that they feel uncomfortable and move around too much without support. So I spend a small fortune on well fitted supportive bras.

beingsunny · 07/07/2020 12:15

I have really large ones, e cup and am so uncomfortable without a bra, I imagine if you didn't need that kind of support it would perhaps be nice?
I don't wear a bra for any other reason than my own comfort.

Ulrikaka · 07/07/2020 12:19

I am another one who prefers to wear a bra, but I also prefer to wear clothes generally, the thought of getting in after work, taking off my bra and putting on pyjamas makes me feel all wrong.
