Not bothering with a bra during lockdown

NemesiaPinkLagoon · 07/07/2020 11:06

There's a fashion piece in the Guardian about a decline in bra wearing during lockdown.

I'm interested to know thoughts on this! Has anyone stopped wearing their bra and found it a revelation?

I always feel sloppy and undressed without a bra, and don't find it very comfortable with quite large boobs (E cup). I'm breastfeeding at the moment and wear nursing bras with pads to handle leaks.

I don't know if I would ever feel comfortable going braless regularly (breastfeeding aside) but how much is that because of societal expectations I wonder? I very rarely shave my legs or underarms because I don't like using my free time doing that, and I am not much bothered any more about what others think of that. Maybe similar in terms of choices.

Non-wired bras are great - comfort without the diggy feeling, and I've been wearing mine throughout.

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/07/2020 12:20

I'm a DD and much more comfortable in a bra. It's never been a problem.

BlueJava · 07/07/2020 12:23

I wear a bra every day and have continued to do so in lockdown. I'm still working though - albeit from home - so up at 7 am and work from 8am - 6pm ish. Surely if you have to leave your bra off it just means it doesn't fit that well?

I wear one if I am leaving the house, but apart from that I don't. I only have 3 decent bras and don't want them damaged by overwashing, so not wearing them means that when I have to wear them when I'm back in the office, they will be in good nick. My bras are stupidly expensive though because I have JJ cups.

MyGodImSoYoung · 07/07/2020 12:30

This is really interesting. Just before lockdown I stopped wearing bras at home (I'm a 32E FWIW) but wear them to work. I find it hard to find bras in my size and then they aren't very comfortable.

I do think my boobs are looking more saggy now though... maybe they needed the support of the bra after all.

Littlebyerockerboo · 07/07/2020 12:32

Lockdown has made me really lax about bra wearing, I only wear one when going out, at home I'm always braless as I hate the restricted feeling of them.
I have big breasts but im way more comfortable without it, its become such a way of life ive now been out without one quite regularly.

EBearhug · 07/07/2020 12:42

I wear a bra for sport (not swimming, though, not that I've done that during lockdown.) Otherwise, I rarely wear one anyway, even before lockdown. There are certain tops I will wear a bra with, but generally not. However, I am only an A-cup, so it's not uncomfortable for me.

HaudMaDug · 07/07/2020 12:43

I'm a bra off and waistband undone as soon as I get in through the door.
Home is my soft, comfy place so PJs are my uniform unless I'm out dog walking but even then my fried eggs only need a bra to hide my peanut nipples poking out.

xmummy2princesx · 07/07/2020 12:44

I don’t wear a bra in the house

user1471548941 · 07/07/2020 14:00

I’ve switched to sports bras as they offer more support. At a J cup on a size 6 frame, even my favourite Bravissimo fitted “normal” bras are usually pretty uncomfortable for a whole day at work.

So my chunky sports bras it is. Not usually suitable for the office as they look like black crop tops so don’t work under my white shirts!

Bunnymumy · 07/07/2020 14:06

I only wear a bra if I'm going out.
Am a 32G cup too xD

I don't ont get why anyone puts a bra on if no one is gonna see xD maybe if I had kids or a lodger or something but not living the single/just with a partner.

My bras hurt my shoulders soneimes though. I think with big boobs it can redistribute the weight in a way which actually gives less support than going braless.

reluctantbrit · 07/07/2020 14:10

I have GG/H cup size, no way I can not wear a bra.

I don’t understand the idea of taking it off at home compared to outside. I wear comfortable clothes and even if I would change after a day in the office it would still be normal clothes, no pj or tracksuit bottom.

A good bra should not feel like you are strapped in. You should be able to ignore it like you ignore buttons on a pair of trousers,

Mamette · 07/07/2020 14:13

Under the rules of the bra intervention I am a 28 band. I don’t have much padding in that area of my body (I do a bit lower down my torso!) so it’s fucking uncomfortable. I gave up wearing the 28 bands and got some 30 bands and they are better.

I still have a time limit on bra-wearing though. Time runs out 5 minutes after I get home, usually.

Over lockdown I’ve just been putting one on to go out. I would t put a bra on just to potter around the house. I have some vest tops with built in support, they’re a good compromise.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 07/07/2020 14:58

I rarely wear one, resort to CK sports-style (they're really soft) if I feel self-conscious (E cup but small back). I've never found a comfortable one! Ideally lots of women would stop wearing them so we can normalise it and save ourselves a fortune.

MsEllany · 07/07/2020 15:01

I haven’t been wearing a bra at all, I actually went out the other day with no bra on at all - I never ever do that, would put a crop top on at the very least - I’ve got so used to it I didn’t even notice till I’d be out for half an hour.

MsEllany · 07/07/2020 15:02

I’m a very saggy H cup btw! I was wearing a jacket over my top.

ItWorriesMeThisKindofThing · 07/07/2020 15:04

Much comfier with a bra on. Usually can’t wait to put it on in the morning. But if others are happier without that’s brilliant, would save them a lot of money.

Mistymonday · 07/07/2020 15:16

I’ve been wearing a bra every day as I find it more comfortable at cup size D-DD. I don’t feel dressed or kempt without one. I do however wear exceedingly comfortable bras only - the M&S sumptuously soft t-shirt bras, which fit me well and I highly recommend!

Number3or4 · 07/07/2020 15:24

I wear them for my own comfort and something to help manage leaks during breastfeeding times.

GrannyBags · 07/07/2020 15:28

I have day time bras and night time sleep bras. I’m 34 H so need the support - I’m 47 and I don’t want saggy boobs in the future.

ShinyFootball · 07/07/2020 15:30

I find them uncomfortable.

Don't tend to wear at home.

It would be good if we could wear or not, outside home without it being obvious/ not really acceptable for those who are older with larger boobs. Of course it is acceptable for younger/ smaller but men do stare. I wouldn't venture out without one.

I'm a Double E or F but narrow back.

Feels like they need to be public pleasing rather than what we want to do.

Maybe we need to burn them Grin but really it should be each to their own and fine either way (some chance).

fallfallfall · 07/07/2020 15:38

I had a reduction and lift last year. No need to wear a bra. Should have done it decades ago. Bras are not comfortable.

BertieBotts · 07/07/2020 15:47

I haven't regularly worn a bra for about 12 years! I often didn't bother to wear one for access reasons when breastfeeding DS1, and just never really went back. I am quite flat chested, so I don't need the support. However, sometimes I want something just to conceal my nipples, which irritates me TBH - the existence of my nipples is not in itself a sexual availability signal, although some men seem to think so.

lazylinguist · 07/07/2020 15:57

I am big boobed and don't feel comfortable without a bra, but during lockdown I've started wearing pull-on, wireless, stretchy bras. A bit like sports bras but not as restraining as I'd use for actual sport. They are sooo much more comfortable, cheaper and easily washable. I don't think I'll ever go back to underwired.

Ristar · 07/07/2020 16:32

Oh no way. I feel so much more comfortable with one on, and I'm an A cup so it's not because they are massive 😂 I just don't like the feeling of them jiggling about while I'm doing the housework etc
