Menopause right after giving birth..?

Cornberry · 06/07/2020 19:38

I have a 10 week old son. My pregnancy was monstrous, and since his birth I have been struggling with awful symptoms, constant panic attacks, but most awful is insomnia. Before we got pregnant, I had been starting to wonder if I was perimenopausal as my period patterns had changed as my period patterns had changed, and they had become very light indeed. I had always been very regular before that. I wonder now if it is possible that I only got pregnant by very slim odds, and actually I was about to start menopause, and now postpartum that is what's happening? Has anyone experienced this? I am 38 and this is our second child.

Post natal insomnia is a thing - I don’t know much about it but I’m sure there is help online

I think it's way more likely to be PND

Cornberry · 06/07/2020 19:47

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou I don't have typical signs of PND though.

I think it’s probably weird post natal symptoms that nobody tells you about. I had night sweats and in growing toenails! The night sweats were so bad I shrunk an expensive duvet.

It's possible.. I had my third child at 38 and four months later the doctor told me I was menopausal based on blood tests. I was really shocked as we had not ruled out a fourth child at the time. She told me I had been very lucky to conceive only a year earlier.

After the birth I had very heavy bleeding for two months or so and then it just stopped. I'd have a light bleed every few months after that which went on for two years or so.

Get blood tests.

Have you spoken to your GP? Might be worth considering thyroid testing (have a google of postpartum thyroiditis).

Postnatal anxiety is a thing and it’s exactly like that - panic attacks and insomnia. It tends to get worse around the 3-4 month mark, so could be what you’re experiencing. I think it would be much more likely than menopause.

Happened to a family member at 40. Gave birth, periods didn't return and she had funny symptoms and blood test showed menopausal. So can happen.

My partner's ex wife had this. Had their child at 45 then straight into menopause

bumblingbovine49 · 06/07/2020 21:53

I had DS at 39 . I had a few light periods despite breast feeding but after about 9 months my periods stoppedat age 40 and I haven't had one since . I am 55 now

Cornberry · 07/07/2020 13:45

Interesting, thanks. It's so confusing because the symptoms are symptoms of lots of things.

I know this is an old thread but just in case you are still on here did you ever get to the bottom of what was going on? I’m experiencing something very similar.

Cornberry · 18/10/2022 19:24

yes I did! It's depletion which is commonly diagnosed as PND. In particular B12. Did you know that nitrous oxide wipes out your B12?! (that's the gas and air). this is a good article. But i would recommend getting a full blood panel before taking an supplements which skew you results. Low B12 is very serious. Add in the BF, low iron, exhaustion etc,

@Sailorsgirl44 I know this is an old post but I wanted to ask how you found having a little one with the menopause because I'm also 38 and I'm sure I may be peri menopausal, we are going for fertility tests to check but I'm so worried if I did manage to get pregnant how I'd cope if I go in to menopause. I have bouts of intense heart palpitations and my period on and off with period pains then it'll pass for a few mths and i feel fine but when it starts it's so unsettling I also feel wiped out with it, the idea of being up multiple times in the nt worries me if I became menopausal after. Xx
