There's sty loads of the back stuff!

But streaky? None on the shelves!

Do actually prefer a streak tbf.

But, but how can there be a shortage? I'm guessing it all comes from different of the same animal? Confused

Anyone else noticed?

Yes! I tried to get streaky at the weekend for Canadian pancakes, bacon and maple syrup. Couldn’t get any. Had to make do with back and it’s just not the same. Tried both Morrison’s and Tesco

Belly bacon is streaky, back bacon is the other stuff. Although Americans call back bacon Canadian bacon, which is confusing given BigGlasses breakfast...

BankofNook · 06/07/2020 19:19

I couldn't get any belly pork at the butchers yesterday after there being none the week before either. The butcher said they can't get hold of any from their suppliers but didn't give a reason why other than there's none to be had.

I thought I'd just had bad luck or gone at the wrong time. I couldn't get streaky on my last two trips to the shops. There's clearly something afoot

Somanysocks · 06/07/2020 19:26

Plenty of streaky in Lidl tonight, I wanted smoked back, which they didn't have though.

It's a pigging mystery isn't it? Confused

We usually get bacon from M&S, and they never have any dry cured back in, which is our preference, so usually have to get streaky.

Other bacon oddity I've noticed is that our Co-op only sells rubbish bacon, ie wet cured lower welfare foreign stuff, which doesn't exactly fit in with their ethical credentials.

Pixxie7 · 07/07/2020 05:01

No problems here

Nandocushion · 07/07/2020 05:40

Just so you know, what you lot call 'Canadian bacon', Canadians call 'back bacon'. And what you call 'streaky bacon', Canadians call 'bacon'. HTH.

Oh god now I've read the word 'bacon' too much and it looks like a fake word now.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/07/2020 06:17

I recently read a fairly old novel where 2 blokes were trying to explain to an old-fashioned grocer the type of bacon they wanted, rather than back.

‘We like it more striped, as it were.’ Grin

Very odd Babs, yes you'd have thought you could rely on the co-op for ethical artisanal shiz HmmGrin

I call it rashers, just to confuse things further Confused

CMOTDibbler · 07/07/2020 17:11

Neither of the butchers I go to for bacon (we have a preferred one but their hours are quite short so sometimes have to buy from the other) have a supply problem, but they both cure their own bacon and one has their own slaughterhouse so very short supply chains.
Dry cure smoked short back bacon from butcher #1 is a thing of the gods btw
