Just that really!..

DP has just walked in from work and commented on how "nice" i looked - my face was smeared with coconut oil after wearing a (shop brought) rose face mask -

im out of work at the moment and cant afford to buy my usual skincare bits, so i thought a "coconut oil serum" might work...

What are your skincare/beauty essentials or skincare hacks?

....Bonus points for cheap/homemade tips that i can steal

I do naff all.
I wash my face, not with soap.
I don't wear make-up so nothing to clog up my paws.
I think have good gene's though.
At 51, I certainly don't look it.

Iamthewombat · 06/07/2020 15:30

I’m seeing your paws clogged up with foundation as you rub them on your furry face and whiskers. You’re right to avoid that.

Littlebyerockerboo · 06/07/2020 15:31

I dont wear make up except for special occasions either.
I do smoke and drink however, so like a bit of skincare regime to try and combat crappy lifestyle choices and kid myself into feeling better Grin
Although my skincare over the last month has been... wash face in the morning. Evening if i can be bothered... and go to bed.
DP shock at me looking "nice" was likely more me looking "clean" Grin

This sounds harsh but I exfoliate my face and body twice a week with salt and milk.

The salt is obviously to exfoliate and the milk to take the harshness away. It's definitely evened out my complexion. I also Ice my face every evening.

My full routine is.

AM. Cleanse face. Tone and moisturise. I also add a few drops of lavender into the moisturiser.
PM see AM, but I ice my before putting on my moisturiser and lavender.

Every Wed and Sun. I give myself a facial.
Cleanse.
Steam.
Exfoliate.(with salt and milk)
Mud mask.
Wash off with gentle face wash.
Sheet mask.
Wash off with soap and water.
Ice
Apply tea bags on my eyes.
Moisturiser and lavender drops.

I also apply eye cream every other night.

PurpleDaisies · 06/07/2020 15:47

I switched to Superdrug natural radiance from Estée Lauder. I recommend it so often that I feel I should get commission from them but it’s really cheap, vegan cruelty free and my skin has never been better.

How do you "ice" your face? What is your salt/milk ratio mix? I usually use a salt scrub from lush, but I've been thinking that surely rocksalt mixed with something would do the same job!

What works now is the same as 20 years ago, sunblock & retinol. Vit c is also effective.

But that’s pretty much it for clinically proved anti ageing skincare.

Drinking & smoking is like taking a wrecking ball to your collagen and elastin though. You’ll lose 30% of it at menopause too.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 06/07/2020 17:19

I just wrap a block of ice in a cloth and rub it on my face and neck until it dissolves.

3 table spoons of salt into a bowl and pour the milk over making sure the salt is submerged in the milk. I don't actually measure it out. Id say there's probably more milk tha n salt though.

Meditation works for me. I have found that the better and calmer I feel on the inside, the better my skin looks

vampirethriller · 06/07/2020 17:47

Johnson's baby soap and Astral moisturiser.

HadleyHem · 06/07/2020 17:50

Sleep.
Drinking water.
Not smoking.
SPF and staying out of the sun - big hat, covering up

doadeer · 06/07/2020 17:50

I make sure to always cleanse my face well with a balm or milk cleanser. I use Retinol, lots of suncream all year, moisturise a lot and drink loads of water. I use acid toner to exfoliate - I find grains too harsh.

You can find good budget cleansers and moisturisers - I think the key is to maintain a good routine.

QueenCT · 06/07/2020 17:50

Retinol
SPF
Vitamin C
Don't sunbathe

Nyctophyllia · 06/07/2020 18:12

Stay out of the sun, try vaseline overnight its amazing, I'm sure there was a thread about it on style and beauty
I do it regularly and wake up with grease free plumped up skin, I dont have any wrinkles at 50 ( bit of chub helps lol)

Notrightbutok · 06/07/2020 18:18

I'm 52 but look younger, partly due to having a Jamaican parent as 'black don't crack'.

For a many years I've used skin care products that are vegan and without chemical nasties. I make my own eye cream, not vegan as it has beeswax. I use a DIY blend of oils on my face.

Just recently I invested in Retinol, bit C and Hyaluronic acid serum. Also bought some factor 30 spf for my face.

I've used gentle soap bars on my face for a good few years too.

chunkyrun · 06/07/2020 18:18

Skins so fickle what works for one might not for another. Sunblocks lots of water seems pretty universal though

Thecazelets · 06/07/2020 18:41

Currently have the best skin of my life and have been wondering why, especially given that I am perimenopausal and half a century old.

I don't drink or smoke. Always take makeup off at night. Always wear SPF and stay out of the sun. Big sunhat and sunglasses in the summer, always.

I can't make myself do the drinking gallons of water thing, but I do stay hydrated (mainly tea.)

Naturally a bit oily so that means I don't really have lines or wrinkles - but have had mild spottiness on and off over the years. Have recently given up sugar and that seems to have made my skin really clear.

Very simple routine since lockdown - no more fiddling about with scrubs, serums and so on. This is the biggest change, as I am a recovering skincare addict and have lots of expensive lotions and potions in the bathroom that I am no longer using. I've even started washing my face in the shower with an olive oil bar soap.

Experience has taught me that this equilibrium could change in an instant due to hormonal disruption or something less obvious, so I'm enjoying it while it lasts!

Snog · 06/07/2020 19:01

Giving up all sugars is famous for improving your skin!

Sunnysidegold · 06/07/2020 19:13

I too can recommend superdrug naturally radiant if you're on a budget. I have discovered acids and stuff vid The Ordinary - reasonably priced. It has really helped the "11" wrinkle at the top of my nose! I go through periods of looking after or neglecting my skin. When I look after it isn't looks and feels so much better so maybe consistency is the key 🤷🏼‍♀️

Notrightbutok · 06/07/2020 19:42

I forgot to mention I try and drink lots of water. I do a lot of exercise classes so I drink a fair bit of water.
