Soup, salad, sandwiches OR retro recipes.

We are clearly all too bored with the lockdown, and have been throwing around random ideas for themed days, for menu planning.

One we thought of was soup, salad, sandwich Saturday. What would you use together?

Another was throwback Thursday - either a favourite from childhood, or a retro style dinner. Any favourites?

Just curious on what other people like to have for the above combos.
Or if you have any themed days at all?

Also, Meatless Monday, the American style Taco Tuesday (Wednesdays? Confused ) Fakeaway Friday, slow cooker Sunday?

@LakeFlyPie

It's easier if you have a proper sandwich maker with the indents. In which case put a slice of bread in the bottom and make sure you push it down into the tray with a spoon. Then crack your egg (the smaller the better) into the bread then put grated cheese on the top. Finally the top slice of bread, close and cook for around 2½ - 3 minutes.

It's a bit more of a faf with a George foreman type grill but possible if you make a nest with the grated cheese and put the egg in the cheese nest.

I hope he enjoys his toasty Smile

Throwback Thursday - I'm a child of the 60s/70s, so - Summer time, cold meat or boiled egg or grated cheese with a pineapple ring with home grown lettuce, tomato and onion and either boiled potatoes with butter and greentails or chips and some tinned veg salad or coleslaw. Winter - lentil or potato soup with egg, cold meat or cheese sandwiches, stovies, stew, macaroni cheese, chicken drumsticks or mince and tatties. Puddings would be Angel Delight, tinned fruit cocktail and evap, rice pudding with tinned peaches or a spoonful of jam.
On days my.mother worked, it might be crispy pancakes, fish fingers or horrible 1970s pizza, all with chips and either beans or tinned peas.

I remember fruit cocktail and evaporated milk too. Was delicious in my mind.

And the fish fingers, chips and beans, followed by Angel Delight.

Wok Wednesday?
Wine Wednesday...
What about
Macaroni Monday - bit limiting, perhaps
Mix up Monday - picky tea or buffet style
My turn Monday - each family member takes a turn to choose

Love Wok Wednesday.

My DS would go for Macaroni Mondays

I like the idea of the same dinner every week. Egg and chips on a Monday, sausage and mash on aTuesday, chicken pie and carrots on a Thursday, roast on a Sunday etc. The simple life

managedmis · 07/07/2020 17:54

Just realised it needs to rhyme Grin

PollyPocketLucyLocket · 07/07/2020 18:05

Macaroni Monday would be great! Different sauces..

Grumpbum123 · 07/07/2020 18:36

If I could pick a meal from my childhood it would be
Ham, egg and proper chips
Strawberries with cream and loads of sugar

missyB1 · 07/07/2020 18:52

Im a simple soul so a homemade tomato and bean soup with a ham and cheese toastie would be heaven!

In fact its what we often have on christmas day lunchtime as we have the roast in the evening.

LadyPrigsbottom · 07/07/2020 18:59

Soup and sandwiches is one of my favourite meals! DH doesn't think soup is a 'proper' dinner Hmm. So we never have it!

I'd vote cauliflower cheese soup, as suggested above and cucumber or tomato sandwiches. DC (5yo) says tomato soup and tuna sandwiches. DH gets no say in this AngryWink.

Love the idea of throwback Thursday! Prawn cocktail, smoked salmon and brown bread? Beef in beer casserole?

When you asked what to do for Wednesday, it reminded me of a woman I used to work with who always had wine Wednesday. The only weekday she was allowed wine! How about...wildcard Wednesday when you can have something you've never tried before? Or Wild West Wednesday? What did they eat though? Buffalo? Beans?

GregoryGrainneog · 07/07/2020 21:39

We used to make soup every Sunday before we had kids. It was called Souper Sunday.

I must bring it back....

PollyPocketLucyLocket · 07/07/2020 22:39

@ButteryPuffin what type of sauces would you have?

Excellent choice @Grumpbum123.

@missyB1 that sounds so simple and delicious.

@LadyPrigsbottom Wild West food? Maybe chilli too? Jackets? Wildcard Wednesday sounds good.

I love the sound of Souper Sunday. May swap that in, in place of my Saturday idea
