Beach between Southampton and Banbury?

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 05/07/2020 07:43

Going South today to see DD, having not seen her before Crimbo. Would love to see the sea again, on way down or way back...Any good suggestions? Just want to see it, not sit on it, or paddle. TIA.

I know its early, but bumping for the southern crowd, hopefully. Husband chomping at the bit to leave and get on the motorway.

What? Is there a typo in there somewhere? Surely Southampton is the nearest bit of 'coastline' to Banbury?

leafeater · 05/07/2020 08:18

Sorry, but you are heading from inland Banbury directly south to Southampton. You are not going to go past a beach. You will have to overshoot the city and go to Lymington or go to Lee on Solent but you are still going to be looking at the Solent or an estuary.

Probably didn't explain that well. Leaving southampton tomoz, to go home (Midlands) via an overnight at Banbury. I realise that an organised person would have done this days ago.

So the question is, beach near Southampton. The route to Banbury is just straight north. I’d just google ‘beach near Southampton’ Smile

BikeRunSki · 05/07/2020 08:27

You need to go to the beach whilst you are still in the coast at Southampton. There is no beach beach there and Banbury, you are heading inland the whole way!

borntobequiet · 05/07/2020 08:32

Puzzled by this.
But you could go via Southsea in a sort of loop back onto M3/A34/Oxford/Banbury.

RHTawneyonabus · 05/07/2020 08:33

What!? Are you basically asking for a recommendation of a beach near Southampton?

Lepe Country Park is beachy and probably the nearest

MistyMinge2 · 05/07/2020 08:34

There isn't a beach between Southampton and Banbury. I'd drive via the New Forest and go to New Milton. Any really lovely sandy beaches will be quite a drive and possibly involve hitting traffic/crowds. If you don't mind driving further then Hengistbury head and Mudeford are nice.

MistyMinge2 · 05/07/2020 08:36

I meant Milford on sea, not new Milton.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 05/07/2020 08:38

OK. Early morning for me. Was actually particularly asking for nice beach, which Google won't necessarily accurately tell me. Thanks for this.

Depends where in Southampton you are. If your DH is desperate to get home diverting to see the sea is going to add quite a bit to your journey. Do you want to see a beach?

If you're central or east your best bet is to head towards Portsmouth and come off at Jn 9 and go to Lee on the Solent. That is probably the closest beach accessible via reasonable road and you can drive alongside the sea for a good distance. You will be adding over an hour to your trip home though.

PrayingandHoping · 05/07/2020 08:43

Do u just want to see the sea or go to the beach? If u just want to see the sea drive south in Southampton to ocean village and go for a walk around the harbour. Or head towards hamble area, it's nice over there.

There's no nice beaches in Southampton area. U would have to head to Bournemouth or hayling island to find a sandy beach

CherryPavlova · 05/07/2020 08:45

Yes depends which part of Southampton and how far you want to go out of your way. Depends whether to swim or see the sea?

CherryPavlova · 05/07/2020 08:46

I too would go via Portsmouth and head to probably Southsea. Then it’s a straight up the A3 A34 towards Banbury.

Deliqueen · 05/07/2020 08:49

Lepe/Calshot or other side try Netley or Royal Victoria country park. First car park is right on the beach for a nice little walk before you set off.

YouJustDoYou · 05/07/2020 08:59

Bournemouth is a half hour from Southampton buuuuut weather is bad so wouldn't recommend any beach right now tbh

MistyMinge2 · 05/07/2020 09:00

The coastline on The Solent isn't the most picturesque, but it's interesting in places. Hamble isn't too far from Southampton, there's a nice area to sit/wander down by the yacht club. Parking is quite limited though.

Obviously between Southampton and Banbury there are lots of beaches just off the A34. Abingdon Beach and Newbury Beach tend to get a bit crowded. Highclere Beach is lesser known because many people have trouble finding it - should not be busy at all.

OP. Lepe Beach.

Or if you don't really want a beach, then Milford on Sea has nice cliffs and stoney beach.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 05/07/2020 15:27

Great thanks. Local knowledge is a marvelous thing. Weather currently fab in Southampton. Don't know about tomoz.

The coastline on the Solent is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!

But it is a working coastline, so lots of ships and docks and yachts and ferries and not much sand until you get to Dorset and West Sussex borders.

If you just want lots of water I would go to Town Quay/Ocean Village in Southampton.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 06/07/2020 19:50

So. Couple of mentions of Milford on Sea. So went there. Blew some cobwebs away. Great. And guess what... Found a Waitrose on the way back, so went to buy some Satsuma shower gel, I have heard so much about. They have stopped doing it! So bought the Essentials grapefruit one and a ginger and clementine one. I think. I've left it in the car. Very good day. Thanks all.
