Shit On Toast and other favourite meals

A friend of mine’s go-to meal when she’s exhausted or just can’t be bothered is Shit On Toast, which can be any kind of other foodstuff (beans, tinned ravioli, spaghetti hoops etc.) placed on top of toast.

Another friend swears by Eggs Is Eggs, which comprises... eggs.

In our house, similar meals in the rotation include:

Stuff On A Tray (which involves placing the contents of the fridge on a tray and putting it in the middle of the table with a fistful of cutlery)

Vegan Slop (self-explanatory)

Noodles In A Bowl (fancy)

...any of which could be garnished with a clump of cress, a crescent of crisps, and/or a hot egg.

What are your similar rubbish but well-beloved standbys?

Shit On Toast now there's are marketing angle that was missed by Heinz Toast Toppers. 😝

@ifigoup Shit on toast describes perfectly my entire diet when I'm on my own. Respect to your friend snd I'll be using that name for my toast based culinary creations from now on.

Baked beans and pasta. With some red onion if in being fancy. All mixed up together. I like to think of it as highly filling and mildly nutritious.

UFOs = Unidentified Frozen Objects ie tubs of leftovers without a label.

For pudding "Swamp Monster Surprise" which is chocolate custard covering any stewed fruit or cake that needs using up.

MouseholeCat · 05/07/2020 14:10

Toothpaste pasta. Not actual toothpaste, but pasta with just tomato puree as the sauce. To a kids eyes, the tube = toothpaste.

DH's go-to is taco pasta. Pasta + mince + a packet of taco seasoning, drizzled with hot sauce at the end. Bleurgh.

VeganVeal · 05/07/2020 14:17

A cup of beans, with a sausage to scoop it up with

EggysMom · 05/07/2020 14:26

Rice sludge. Effectively long-grained rice, cooked in tinned chopped tomatoes and their juice (with just a bit more water), a drop of chilli sauce, and some herbs. Looks ghastly but fills a hole!

EggysMom · 05/07/2020 14:28

BIL eats UFOs all the time. DH generally cooks way too much casserole, curry, and chilli, so the surplus gets tubbed, frozen, and passed onto BIL (who is a middle-aged single male). I don't label the tubs, he plays pot-luck when he gets one out to defrost!

My fabled 'meals with a twist' Grin
My family always blanche slightly when I announce that supper will be with a twist. I can't bear to waste food, so I take every opportunity to incorporate leftovers and old bits and pieces from the fridge, which no-one wants, into a delicious, nutritious gloop. Chilli and spaghetti bolognese are particularly useful for this!

whathappenedtojoosters · 05/07/2020 17:15

Cheesy beansy rice is a favourite here.

APheasantPluckersSon · 05/07/2020 17:19

Summerhouse pie.

Got it’s name from when we spent a week in a summerhouse. On the last night, I basically cleared the fridge as much as possible and put it in a pie with mash on top. Can also use puff pastry or shortcrust depending on ingredients to hand.

APheasantPluckersSon · 05/07/2020 17:21

Love the UFO’s!

Always fun seeing what will emerge from a frozen lump of ??? slowly defrosting Grin

APheasantPluckersSon · 05/07/2020 17:23

Oh and baguette pizza. Old baguette, olive oil, ketchup, cheese and whatever else for a topping 😋😋

HavanaABanana · 05/07/2020 17:45

My favourite easy dinner is microwave Jasmine rice with some green vegetables mixed through(Usually peas, green beans or asparagus) and a little soy sauce and sesame oil. A fried egg on top, and sprinkled with nori flakes and toasted sesame seeds.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 05/07/2020 19:00

Blindfold breakfast. (Not necessarily eaten for breakfast but can be).
Fried potatoes (tinned if desperate), mushrooms, onions, chopped bacon and sausage with beaten egg poured over. Kind of like a fritata but the egg is less dense. Initially discovered on a camping trip. The mushrooms can turn it’s kind of grey/ brown colour hence the need for a blindfold.

Someone on here once said that, when stuck for ideas, they used to lower their baby head first into the chest freezer and cook whatever it was clutching when pulled out Grin

luzzbightyear · 05/07/2020 20:18

UFO (unidentified frozen object) out of the freezer, usually without a label, tends to be soup, chilli or bolognese but you don't know until it's thawed out and it's too late to change your mind.

Shit n sauce - pretty much anything leftover but with ketchup.

AWryGiraffe · 05/07/2020 21:30

I'm enjoying the contrast between cheese on a plate and meals involving artichoke hearts and nori flakes

SantanaBinLorry · 06/07/2020 17:21

OMG my kids are so having this for thier tea tonight!

ArcheryAnnie · 08/07/2020 13:58

This is GENIUS.

Slightly disappoint as I thought you might be talking about “Shit on a Shingle”! SOS was one of my favourite lazy food items when I was younger and am now craving it. It’s basically creamy beef on toast!
