Shit On Toast and other favourite meals

ifigoup · 04/07/2020 17:56

A friend of mine’s go-to meal when she’s exhausted or just can’t be bothered is Shit On Toast, which can be any kind of other foodstuff (beans, tinned ravioli, spaghetti hoops etc.) placed on top of toast.

Another friend swears by Eggs Is Eggs, which comprises... eggs.

In our house, similar meals in the rotation include:

Stuff On A Tray (which involves placing the contents of the fridge on a tray and putting it in the middle of the table with a fistful of cutlery)

Vegan Slop (self-explanatory)

Noodles In A Bowl (fancy)

...any of which could be garnished with a clump of cress, a crescent of crisps, and/or a hot egg.

What are your similar rubbish but well-beloved standbys?

We used to have ‘vegetable slop’ op so I know exactly what you mean. Any vegetables you have fried with onion and garlic. Serve with any carb.

xanthippe8 · 05/07/2020 00:55

Shock I thought I was scraping the barrel.

@wejammin I reckon that's genius!!!

@Pieceofpurplesky

We also had shit with sugar on it (Cheshire).

I love a leftover tea. Monday if we have had a roast. Left over veg, potatoes, broccoli etc all chopped up and made in to patties then fried like bubble and squeak, served with bacon and an egg on top

The bubble and Squeak thing with bacon and egg on top sounds lovely! I love bubble and squeak but never htought of putting the egg on top
Pieceofpurplesky · 05/07/2020 03:32

The bacon has to be really crispy

ElizabethMainwaring · 05/07/2020 03:49

@Bunnyhop1502

We have “smorgasbord” when I need to go shopping. Basically just uses up the last little bits of everything! Usually chips, onions rings, olives etc followed by a bit of nearly stale cake if you’re lucky.
Yes. I do this a lot. A mixture of stuff that's nearing, or even past, its use by date. In our house it's referred to as "a right old weird set up".
Thighdentitycrisis · 05/07/2020 03:55

We used to call “mum’s cafe” egg chips and beans with bread and butter.

Thanks. Am drooling now Smile!

Pop pop mushrooms = mushrooms in pepper sauce on garlic bread. I love it with a generous squirt of ketchup .So called because our local pub used to serve it. It was actually called pepperpot mushrooms but one of the kids asked for 'pop pop 'mushrooms & it stuck.

Pasta cooked in chicken stock (cube) with lots of grated mature cheddar on top. Perfect comfort food.

Home-made curry flavour SuperNoodles - egg noodles cooked in chicken stock, with curry powder added.

TinkerLilly · 05/07/2020 05:48

First Thing.

(First thing that falls out of the freezer)

Egg and Chips but just that. Not egg and chips and a slice of ham and a spoonful of baked beans and perhaps a giant sausage roll. Just Egg and Chips.

ifigoup · 05/07/2020 07:14

@thisstooshallpass

Shit on toast does a disservice to a lot of good things, simple beans on toast with cheese. There's absolutely nothing shit about it. Many of the combinations are fond food memories of childhood. Together with...

Potato waffles and fried eggs
Fried eggs on toast with HP
Cold meat with baked beans and roast potatoes
Veggie sausages and fried egg on toast
Heinz spaghetti on toast with blanket or black pepper

Ah, you misunderstand the syntax. “Shit” is not being used here in a derogatory way, but simply as a synonym for “unspecified stuff”.

I am enjoying the thread. Ifits, SSIAB and Cheese Plate are very much in the spirit.

BBBBP

Bacon, Baked Beans and Baked Potatoe

spottygymbag · 05/07/2020 08:47

Bean surprise. It consists of a diced onion, tin of beans and tin of chopped tomatoes with random extras. On various occasions the surprise has been:
Chorizo/sausage/salami added
No chorizo/sausage/salami added
No beans added (lentils and chickpeas only)
And one notable occasion the surprise was far too much cayenne pepper Blush

JovialNickname · 05/07/2020 09:02

Cheesy peanuts

Cheese cubes with a handful of peanuts thrown over the top

Florencenotflo · 05/07/2020 09:14

If it pie - if it's in the fridge/freezer you can eat it! Usually my mums reply to a chorus of "What's for dinner tonight". Basically, I can't be arsed... feed yourselves!

This could range from eggs - cooked in any way, shape or form. Scrambled or omelette usually. Hot dogs. Cheese on toast with a fried egg on top. Tinned spaghetti bolognese on toast. Tinned meatballs and toast. Smash with hot dogs and grated cheese all mixed together. And my dads favourite... the Fray Bentos pie with a couple of fried eggs. 😂

KitMarlowesCodpieceOfThigh · 05/07/2020 09:21

@wejammin We do that! Starter toast: plain buttered; main course toast: Marmite; pudding toast: jam or chocolate spread. It's an excellent meal.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 05/07/2020 09:27

Noodles and frozen veg that you cook in the microwave for 3 minutes add Thai sweet chilli sauce

Mash with some bacon or ham, onion and spinach all fried in a pan (mash added last)

Garlic bread with beans or spaghetti hoops in a bowl with grated cheese. The garlic bread gives the dinner a continental flavour

Crisp sandwich with some sliced cheese and cucumber

motorcyclenumptiness · 05/07/2020 10:08

Melange (pronounced with great drama) = stuff from the fridge that's on the turn
Empty pasta = spaghetti with olive oil and black pepper

Happynow001 · 05/07/2020 10:16
  • Smashed sardines (the ones gunned in oil but with some of the oil removed) on good quality thick toast.
  • Bottled roasted/grilled sweet peppers with bottled globe artichoke hearts with baked sweet potatoes and hot smoked salmon or trout with any salad in the fridge plus some quick dressing
  • beans on hot buttered toast with cheddar or a fried egg
  • scrambled eggs on toast especially if I have any smoked salmon in
Happynow001 · 05/07/2020 10:17

Not gunned in oil but CANNED in oil

JasperRising · 05/07/2020 10:34

Crap in a pan. Whatever you can lay your hands to cook in a pan with tinned tomatoes and serve with pasta.

SantanaBinLorry · 05/07/2020 10:41

Picky Dinner - any combo of crackers, cheese, breadsticks, carrot, apple, ham and pickles.
If It's - If its in the fridge we're eating it coz theres nothing else, we're going shopping tomorrow/soon.
Jarganara - (jarge is a local term for 'fake') fake carbanara. Pasta, cheese triangles, ham, milk and parmasan. The kids love it and wont eat proper Carbanara now.

Cordial11 · 05/07/2020 10:44

Old faithful bacon sandwhich, toasted bread with tomato sauce (obv)

Or

Cheesy chips and beans

Mascotte · 05/07/2020 10:45

Heaty up food.

Picnic in the living room

Both these involve random stuff, usually what's in freezer.
