Any mattress experts? Are children’s medium/firm mattresses the same as adult ones?

Help needed!

I need to buy DD a mattress to go on her new double bed. She is 10 years old, about 145cm tall and a little under 5 stone.

I phoned John Ryan who recommended their softest mattress as at her body weight it will offer enough support and feel firmer that it would do to you or I due to her lower body weight. This seemed to make sense.

Unfortunately I need to replace the other 2 DC’s mattresses too, and could really do with spending under £1k, so thought I’d see what Dreams have to offer.

Phoned Dreams and they said that children need a medium/firm mattress to support their growing spines. This also seemed to make sense. Their children’s mattresses only come in single sizes so I asked which of their comfort ratings I should look for in the adult mattresses to ensure a similar level of support. They said still medium/firm and something about how children used to sleep on the floor

My feeling is that John Ryan are probably correct and I should look for a soft pocket spring mattress, but then I don’t want her to end up like Quasimodo because I went too soft!

We’ll order from somewhere with an exchange guarantee.

We did try a Dreams showroom and the John Lewis showroom but they were all too hard or too soft and she’s too embarrassed to lay down properly and test them anyway, so I thought we’d go with science instead!

I think you're thinking about this way too much! Unless she has some medical or physical needs, anything will be fine. Though, from experience, I would say get a mattress suitable for an adult as she'll grow quickly.

I think you’re probably overthinking it. We just bought something labelled as medium that looked half decent from Ikea.

I probably am overthinking it, but she’s so fussy with mattresses. We had to replace her single (IKEA) foam one with a John Lewis pocket sprung one after about 4 months as she said she woke up sore every morning. Unfortunately she dislikes that too, so buying the larger size was not an option. The other 2 DC are a lot easier and will sleep on what they’re given!

I went with the John Ryan one in the end as she likes our one from there and the one they recommended was a budget end version of the same thing, so seemed a safe bet.

Fingers crossed!

What about a thick mattress topper?
