Hi

Hamilton is now on Disney+, so I would love to watch it after everything I’ve heard about how good it is. I have a general idea of what it’s about, but I’m wondering if it’s difficult to follow if you haven’t got a decent grasp of American history? I don’t want to spend the whole time googling like I do with lots of American political TV shows!

You don’t need a grasp of the history at all but you may learn a bit.

I LOVE this musical! In fact I’m listening to the cast recording on Spotify right now!

I was hoping to see it again this year but that’s out now so I think I’ll be signing up to Disney+ later...

loobylou44 · 03/07/2020 13:44

My favourite musical. No need to follow American history to enjoy watching it. The music is outstanding. I went to see it in London a couple of years ago and was due to see it on Broadway in May. I'm so excited to watch it later today!
Watch it, you won't regret it Smile

ShyTown · 03/07/2020 13:57

Read Hamilton’s Wikipedia page? It will only take a couple of minutes and will cover the basics. I think you can definitely still enjoy it without knowing much as the music is so good. But it’s even better if you can follow at least some of the history.

Great. I’ll give it a go and use Wikipedia too! Thanks

I saw it once having not listened to the music and because hooked. It took me a few listens to really get the story and all the subtleties. The soundtrack is so good. Every time you listen you find something new!

Floralnomad · 03/07/2020 17:30

My daughter was watching this in Disney+ this morning when I got home and I really must be missing something as I didn’t even think the music was that great .

Lua · 03/07/2020 17:35

You do not need to know the particular history because the show will tell you. I bet you will be googling loads after watching it Smile

Best musical ever!

ShirleyPhallus · 03/07/2020 17:39

I think it’s good to know the basics cos the lyrics are very fast and each cast member plays at least 2 characters

user1471515926 · 03/07/2020 17:41

My DH did the wikipedia thing before we saw it at the theatre, and told me the basics, and I'm really glad he did. It did help to have an outline of the story before we went in.

BGirlBouillabaisse · 03/07/2020 17:44

My evening is sorted! Am going to make myself an Aperol Spritz and snacks. DH will just have to lump it. Disney + has been the best thing about lockdown.

WendyHoused · 03/07/2020 17:44

A quick Wiki glance will give you the story, but just jump in and watch it. You won’t pick up on all the details first time, but that’s true with all great productions. It’s great

AiryFairy1 · 03/07/2020 17:48

I love this show so much and would like to see the original cast in action - is it available for today only though?

Divebar · 03/07/2020 17:48

I think you’d do well to listen to the soundtrack before watching it.... there’s so much to take on board. You will want to google him though because his life was so extraordinary

errorofjudgement · 03/07/2020 17:49

I don’t know the story but am watching it now, just got to the intermission. It’s amazing!! It’s a great musical production.

Very · 03/07/2020 17:52

I’ve been looking forward to today – Hamilton day! – for weeks. Absolutely cannot wait to sit down and watch it this evening. It is without a doubt the best musical I’ve ever seen! Michelle Obama called it something like “the greatest piece of art in history “.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 03/07/2020 17:53

DD and I saw it on stage a couple of years ago and it's amazing, it's the only show I've ever seen that had a standing ovation for the opening chords!

Whilst you can enjoy it going in cold, I would recommend reading the accompanying musical book if you enjoy it which includes lots of insight into both the history surrounding Alexander Hamilton and also creative choices which is when you can appreciate Lin-Manuel's genius, so much thought went into every individual word in the show. I'm fairly sure I know more about the American history of the time than I do about UK history of the same time.

smartiecake · 03/07/2020 17:55

Its amazing. I saw it in London last year and I didn't know much about him or the details of American history and I loved it. It is a fabulous show. I have watched it today and loved it again, and cried again at the end. Its so good.

mnahmnah · 03/07/2020 18:32

Did someone say it’s only on there for today??

OP posts:
HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 03/07/2020 18:34

No it's on for the foreseeable future.

mnahmnah · 03/07/2020 18:50

Phew! Sounds brilliant. Looking forward to watching it

You'll enjoy it, OP.

It's a joy and it's impossible not to love it

nettytree · 03/07/2020 23:30

Watch with the subtitles. Some of it is sung quite fast. Very enjoyable, even if you don't know the history.

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 04/07/2020 14:18

I'm going to subscribe to Disney plus for this alone! I love the musical. I've already seen it twice and plan to go once the theatres are open!
Did you watch it OP?

mnahmnah · 04/07/2020 14:22

I haven’t watched it yet - I was persuaded to watch Frozen 2 with DC last night instead! Might try tonight

Act 1 done and I’m enjoying it, even though I am googling lots! I’m one of those annoying people who needs to know the detail and background Grin
