Do any of your children have penpals?

DD has decided she would like a penpal, how do you find one? Are there websites or something? How safe is it to do with the current COVID situation going on? Any advice gratefully appreciated Smile

Mine did, but it was 15-20 years ago, and times have changed.

Does she want a British penpal, or a foreign one? One who speaks and writes English, or does that not matter? I'd suggest asking people you know, and people they know, if they know of anyone who has a child of a similar age who might want to correspond with your DD.

Is your DD in Guiding - they'd be able to set something up for her. I did it for a few girls in my unit over the years. Or does DD's school have contacts in schools in other areas or countries where you could find someone?

She's not too fussed about where in the world they are, as long as she can read it! So they do need to be English speaking really.

She doesn't do guiding, otherwise that would be a really good idea. I could try asking school I guess!

Mine do. One came from here...there used to be a penpals section, not sure if it’s there now...this was 5 years ago and they’re still really good friends and have met several times. We have also used Global Penfriends which has been a very positive experience. My 3 DDs have penfriends from The UK, Austria, Croatia, Slovenia, RSA, Tanzania. Some have fizzled out, others have stayed longe term.
