How many bottles of fizz for 9 people

Depending on Nicolas announcement nexr Thurs hopefully our wedding will go ahead and we'll have a small get together in my MIL garden. Technically going against rules but for one (special) day we're putting rules to one side.
Anyway that's not the point of this post.
Im putting in an order for fizz and have no clue how many bottles to buy. There will be 9 adults, 6 will probably only have one glass as a toast and the other 3 will move on to gin later in the evening. Is 4 about right?

If by 4, you mean 4 each, then yes. 😆

Mitzdob · 02/07/2020 21:48

At least 9! You can add any leftovers to the gin later on in the evening :)

Have fun, and congratulations :)

frenchfancy81 · 02/07/2020 21:52

I'd by 2 cases of 12!!

I agree with 1/2 a bottle per person.

Nacreous · 02/07/2020 21:55

I would have gone with 6, but I have also trekked 15 bottles of wine back on a foot ferry from France in a suitcase so I wouldn't really view 1 or 2 leftovers as a catastrophe, even going by train.

I think a lot of people think they only want one glass or whatever but then they're there and someone comes round with the bottle and they just have one more etc. Someone driving home at 10pm could drink half a bottle of wine between 2 and 3pm and be well and truly sober by 10.

ComeBy · 02/07/2020 21:56

I see that the advice has reached 20 bottles in one post Grin

Get 4 or 5. Alongside the other drinks , and some really nice soft drinks

Fingers crossed for you, congratulations!

Hedgehog44 · 02/07/2020 21:56

Nine at least!

You need 2 bottles just for the toasts. I work on 5 glasses per bottle if I'm calculating by glass as that allows for spillage/froth when opening the bottle/pouring and an overly generous pour.

Somebody is bound to lose their glass or knock it over, even a whole bottle could get spilled. I would assume anyone who says they only want 1 glass will have 2, some might change their mind, others might run out during the toast and need a top up. So that's 12 glasses for those who only want it for toasts - 2.5 bottles. I would allow at least a bottle per person for the 3 people who like champagne. So 6 bottles should be enough with a small margin of error.

But if one of the non-champagne drinkers decides they like gin liqueur and fizz cocktails or somebody decides not to mix their drinks and stick with champagne, you will run out.

IAintentDead · 02/07/2020 22:11

4 nice ones - and then another 3 or 4 cheaper ones (Aldi, Lidl, Asda Prosecco just to be sure.

saltycat · 02/07/2020 22:18

Ohjustme

Enjoy every minute (hopefully it will happen), and best of luck for the day itself and the future.

I feel like I am there planning with you! We have been without much to celebrate for so long.

Your thread uplifted me thanks and all the best.

delilahbucket · 02/07/2020 22:28

I would buy 10. Perhaps have more expensive stuff for the toast and then cheaper for later. Aldi champagne is superb value.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 02/07/2020 22:39

18, would be embarrassing to run out and you can use it another time.

HollowTalk · 02/07/2020 22:41

@Mrsemcgregor

My first thought was 13! Grin
That'll teach you to ask on MN!
HollowTalk · 02/07/2020 22:42

@Sheenais

A case of decent champagne and a case or 2 of Prosecco.
So basically 36 bottles between them?!
Crunchymum · 02/07/2020 22:49
@saltycat everything has gone so smoothly and stress free. We only got engaged in January but because we've been together so long we just decided to do it quickly! No one knows in real life apart from our immediate family. So I've not even been able to wear my engagement ring! Desperate for it to happen!
Why can't you wear your engagement ring? Shock

PrimalLass · 02/07/2020 22:52

I would just buy 12 then use the leftovers another time.

HowFastIsTooFast · 02/07/2020 22:53

For 9 Adults I'd get 10-12 bottles easily, I know you say that some will only have one and a couple aren't drinking but it would be very stingy at a wedding to have an allocated glass each and then run out rather than offering to top up, plus it only takes one bad opening or a few bad pours to loose half a bottle of fizz in overflow. Definitely have too much instead of too little.

I went to a small 40th recently (different lockdown rules) and we were supposed to start on champagne and move on to cocktails/wine later. We were still drinking champagne at midnight, thankfully the host had bought plenty! I love champagne/Prosecco/Cava and I'd be quite put out if I had the taste for it at an event and suddenly it ran out because 'we're drinking gin now'.

That said, congratulations and good luck OP! x

saltycat · 02/07/2020 23:28

The engagement ring would alert all and sundry and they might ask when is the big day and so on.

Good move to keep it off for now and have the tiny gathering with MUCHO bubbles!

domesticslattern · 02/07/2020 23:33

At my wedding we drank one bottle of champagne per adult.
It was great Smile
If you are on a budget, buy 6 bottles of cava and three of champagne and serve the champagne first.
Congratulations!

redbigbananafeet · 02/07/2020 23:37

@AriettyHomily

Well apparently you can get six glasses out of a bottle liars. I'd get 8.
Champagne traditionally served in 125ml so 6 is correct technically. In reality not.
PickAChew · 02/07/2020 23:42

About 2 so everyone can sip a glass each, before drinking some decent wine.

PickAChew · 02/07/2020 23:49

Places like markses and Waitrose do celebration boxes with 2 bottles each of fizzy, plain white and plain red. I'd suggest one of those and some nice sparkling non alcoholic drinks for the light drinkers. And try to have tea or coffee available.

Jasharps · 02/07/2020 23:51

12!

CountFosco · 03/07/2020 06:35

My champagne flutes hold 160 mL if you fill them to the very top, but you'd always leave a small gap at the top so 6 x 125 mL glasses easily out of a 750 mL bottle. In reality I always get more glasses out of a bottle of champagne. I think it's quite unpleasant drinking lots of champagne over many hours so would buy a couple of bottles only for the toasts but also have plenty of whatever else you all like to drink. If you want to be on champagne all day then get 6 bottles to take advantage of any deals, you'll only need 4-5 in reality, especially if the heavy drinkers are moving onto gin later. Ignore those who say get a bottle each, if you know your family aren't heavy drinkers and there will be a few drivers you'll never drink that much.
