How many bottles of fizz for 9 people

Depending on Nicolas announcement nexr Thurs hopefully our wedding will go ahead and we'll have a small get together in my MIL garden. Technically going against rules but for one (special) day we're putting rules to one side.
Anyway that's not the point of this post.
Im putting in an order for fizz and have no clue how many bottles to buy. There will be 9 adults, 6 will probably only have one glass as a toast and the other 3 will move on to gin later in the evening. Is 4 about right?

when I organised parties at work we calculated 1 bottle per person + one extra for a 2 hour event.

GemmeFatale · 02/07/2020 19:46

If they don’t like fizz buy something they will like.

So fizz for those who like it (say three or four bottles) and wine/beer/gin for all

Katinthedoghouse · 02/07/2020 19:46

Fizz you say ?

Well that depends....if it’s champagne then I would continue drinking that so you’d need loads of bottles imo 13 ?

If it’s cava then maybe a couple of glasses then the gin, so 4-5 ?

If it’s prosecco then I’d politely take a sip then discreetly water the plants and head to the gin. So maybe 2 bottles ?

@Ohjustme

Oh and we'll be drinking from about but 2pm. 5 of the adults have children so wont be drinking till the wee hours.
Even if they only drink 1 unit per hour (the rate at which you metabolize alcohol) that still allows them each to drink a whole bottle between 2pm and 10pm. If they want to be even mildly tipsy over 8 hours they'll need a bottle plus gin.
QuentinQuarantino · 02/07/2020 19:46

I'd get 10-12.

Us Irish always over-cater though. Would be mortified if I ran out of booze or food!

StarShapedWindow · 02/07/2020 19:47

My first thought was 12. I’d hate to run dry. They can always be kept if there’s too many.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 02/07/2020 19:47

For a wedding, assume 6 glasses per person at least - so at least 9. I would buy 20.

rottiemum88 · 02/07/2020 19:48

I'd probably aim for a bottle per person regardless

QuentinQuarantino · 02/07/2020 19:48

That's assuming there's red wine/white wine/beer etc on offer as well though.

More if not! Much more 😂

123456abcd · 02/07/2020 19:48

At least 10, probably 12-15 to be safe.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 02/07/2020 19:49

I say this because there are 11 adults in my family including two teetotalers and we got through 3 bottles in the first half hour at Christmas.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 02/07/2020 19:49

Yes buy a case of 12, don't open them all at once! As others have said you can use it later, Christmas, New Year, First Anniversary etc. Hmm maybe two cases on that basis Wink

Tigger001 · 02/07/2020 19:49

2 bottles for the toasts then I would say about a bottle each after that as you are drinking from 2pm (so about 6hrs I suspect at least) and you do only get a few glasses out of a bottle.

I wouldn't mind having 2 bottles left over but wouldn't like to not have the option for people or be limiting people if they fancy a boozy afternoon after not having a gathering for a while, which may actually make the gathering run in longer than expected, first time back together for a while.

Ninkanink · 02/07/2020 19:50

A bottle per person, definitely.

Much, much better to know for sure that you definitely won’t run out. And if you’re left with extra you can enjoy it in the weeks after.

Ninkanink · 02/07/2020 19:51

Oh yes a case of 12 makes perfect sense.

Ginkypig · 02/07/2020 19:52

If it's only for 9 then I'd personally do one per person and then it's there just incase but if two or three bottles are left over they can be saved for other events or weekends or Christmas etc

If it wAs for 30 or 100 people I'd be much more carful about trying to calculate!

Ginkypig · 02/07/2020 19:54

Also The last time we had a get together we had 2 bottles between 5 people but it only worked out 2 small glasses and a little dribble each.

LST · 02/07/2020 19:56

I'm with @katienana and say 20 🤣

Ohjustme · 02/07/2020 19:57

But why one bottle per person when the majority are only having one glass. There will be plenty gin and beers as well.

OP posts:
Sheenais · 02/07/2020 19:58

A case of decent champagne and a case or 2 of Prosecco.

Ohjustme · 02/07/2020 19:59

And sadly all left overs will have to be left at my PILs because we don't stay near them and will have to get the train home the next day as we dont drive 🙄

I'm sure there are suppliers who will do a deal on a use or return basis, they can supply glasses and coolboxes also. If you can source one buy a couple of cases + all the other grog you need. Unused can be returned.

I don't have any recommendations, but friends of ours did this for a Silver Wedding Anniversay and they said it was great, they didn't have to worry about running out or having a heap of bottles left over either.

Hide the bottles though, you would be amazed who will nick your grog!

Many congratulations and I hope it all works out for you in every way.

Tavannach · 02/07/2020 20:00

I'd say 5, going on the caterers' rule of half a bottle per person. And seeing as it's 5 I'd look for offers on 6, like this
www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/waitrose-blanc-de-blancs-brut-nv-french-champagne/083818-42554-42555
You can keep any left over for New Year.

backseatcookers · 02/07/2020 20:01

Even thought 6 of the adults are only drinking 1 glass. I know they wont have more than 1 as they dont like fizz.

Why get fizz for everyone if so many don't like it?! Get enough fizz for those who like (say half a bottle each - though in my family we would probably have more if it's an event over a good few hours) and then make some cocktails / other drinks for those who don't like it. There's no law against having something else for speeches etc. Keep the fizz for those who like it and give your guests who don't like it something they'll enjoy, surely?

Congrats by the way! 🍾

Tavannach · 02/07/2020 20:02

or gift it to your PIL for lending you the garden.
