What would you personally consider ‘man’s work’ (if any)

Just curious really. I’m a bit of a feminist type and feel like I should be able to do everything a man can and be self sufficient but just means I feel hopeless when I realise I can’t. I often expect too much of myself beyond my capabilities.

What do you personally consider man’s work (if any) and would always delegate/ask a male in your family to do?

OP posts:
hamstersarse · 30/06/2020 21:00

I’m a SP and there are definitely things I can’t do (despite my trying) that a man can do.

They usually involve lifting big objects and moving big objects

I do also hate not having a man to fix electrical things, I can do it, but I fucking hate it and blokes seem to like it

Theglittertree · 30/06/2020 21:00

Teaching sons how to pee standing up and explaining the behaviour and care of male “bits”. I will similarly expect to teach our girls about periods, bras and the like. Otherwise DH and I tend to have particular jobs, but not particularly chosen based on gender, although some are determined by our physical characteristics (he’s taller, he gets to remove the ceiling cobwebs and cut the hedge!)

roses2 · 30/06/2020 21:00

Being a penis model?

isseywith4vampirecats · 30/06/2020 21:01

anything that involves getting up a stepladder I hate going up them so he gets all the top of the room jobs like replacing lightbulbs and as hes 6ft 4 he comes in handy for getting things off the top shelves of the kitchen cupboards, but most things from decorating to carpet laying I could do myself if I wanted to and have done in the past, stuff like electrics or plumbing pay someone to do this stuff

Rosieposy4 · 30/06/2020 21:02

Literally nothing
Women shoot themselves in the foot if they say there are men’s jobs
I can rod a drain and wield a chainsaw with the best of them

Ernieshere · 30/06/2020 21:02

I even watched the bloke screed my kitchen floor, hallway & toilet floor & thought "Shit, I could have done that"

Ive just had a delivery from Toolstation to stock up on bits, I was going to tile my downstairs toilet, looked up how to do it and it said to remove the toilet & basin before tiling, which made me think "Oh FFS" Hmm

I was just about to buy a wet tile cutter and tile around the toilet and basin,
So that has pissed me off a bit.

slug · 30/06/2020 21:02

Spider wrangling. Everything else I can do

Helmetbymidnight · 30/06/2020 21:02

anything that requires a penis. or testicles i guess.

male life model?

sirfredfredgeorge · 30/06/2020 21:03

Being a penis model?

Or Puppeteer.

Ilovesausages · 30/06/2020 21:03

In our household it’s anything that I don’t like doing 🤪

custardbear · 30/06/2020 21:04

Just heavy lifting - my DH lifts the tumble truer on top of the washing machine or is planning on filling a ditch around our house with tonnes of gravel - whilst he does this I'll be cleaning, shopping and cooking - I'm
Better st that lol

Spikeypineapples · 30/06/2020 21:04

Carving a roast. I do it but every time I think 'this is a man's job' I don't really know why.

Bookaholic73 · 30/06/2020 21:05

Any outside work:
Gardens
Bins
Drains

He also does the dishes daily, cooks dinner a few times a week, walks the dogs every morning and night.

hamstersarse · 30/06/2020 21:07

How many of posters on this thread have men available to do jobs?

I bet the majority

I have no dad or husband / live in partner....for 11 years...and despite the “women can do everything” protestations...I don’t believe it

I used to think that....until I no longer lived with a strong heavy lifting man

RubberDinghyRapids · 30/06/2020 21:09

Only thing in our house is spider removal... but that's not gender related. I used to put pint glasses over them when I lived with a female flatmate with a polite post-it asking her to remove Grin

SunbathingDragon · 30/06/2020 21:10

Fetching me chocolate! Grin

Generally things that I can’t physically do (or have no wish to do). I can change a tyre (my granddad insisted I learn when I was having driving lessons) but I can’t physically get the tyre off my car.

MrsIronfoundersson · 30/06/2020 21:12

There is a sex difference - DH is taller than me with a longer reach and stronger muscles but I am mentally capable of doing anything he can do (if I could be bothered to learn about plumbing, electrics and the endless fascinating twists and turns of assembling flat pack furniture so that it actually stays up for more than 40 minutes).

Neolara · 30/06/2020 21:12

Anything that I don't want to do.

DanniArthur · 30/06/2020 21:14

DP and I share everything although every so often I'll struggle to open or lift something and my DP will take pleasure in being "a big strong man" to save the day 😂

RedRed9 · 30/06/2020 21:14

despite the “women can do everything” protestations...I don’t believe it

I don’t have a man here to do the jobs @hamstersarse so you should believe it. DP is very strong though and I appreciate if you’re not strong then you miss having someone around who was.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 30/06/2020 21:15

In our house, ironing is a man’s job. And reaching things if it’s quicker than me getting the stepladders. And cleaning the bathroom DSS uses because it’s Not My Problem.

In life, there may be some strenuous manual jobs which are better suited to more men than women, because men in general have greater physical strength and size than women. Some specific health and care jobs (posts) may require a man or woman because of patient or client needs, but no, I don’t think there are any jobs that are unsuited for women.

Mamette · 30/06/2020 21:15

You don’t have to do that, you can tile around if you wish. If you do take up the pan and basin and then lay tiles, you might end up with a different floor level from previously (well you will unless you’re also taking away existing tiles) which means that you won’t be able to just re-connect e.g. the pipe at the back of the loo, as it will be slightly off. This might cause a leak.

For me it’s drilling into the exterior walls of our house. I can’t do it, they are made of some sort of double weight concrete and I don’t have the body weight/ strength to force the drill in.

wagtailred · 30/06/2020 21:15

Id forgotton about those strong grips -he is chief jar opener too

mumwon · 30/06/2020 21:15

@BruceAndNosh you need a strong fork/spoon with tapered end - place this end under the screw lid & gently twist until the air is released than you will find the screw lid comes off easily

MsRinky · 30/06/2020 21:16

Vehicle maintenance. I didn't learn to drive until I was nearly 40, and have zero knowledge or interest in engines, especially as we have a 50 year old campervan. I do the bins though!
