Scrolling through companies house for unknown reasons, and came across a person who has been a director of over 20,000 companies, but resigns within a day of becoming director!?! Does any one have any explanation as to why they would do this?

They will be a nominee director, someone who you can name as a director to keep your company anonymous.

More likely a company formation agent. They form "shelf companies" by the hundred. When someone wants to buy a company ready-to-go they transfer the shares to the new owner, appoint them as director, and resign.
