My partner has turned yellow and I am scared

Over the last couple of weeks his skin and eye whites have turned yellow, he also has dark urine which has not improved despite upping his fluid intake by at least an extra 2 litres a day, he is more tired than usual too. I don't want to scare myself witless and Google. He has called the GP and is having blood tests tonight.

@GimmeAy

The itch is related to the liver as far as I know. (I'm under a hepatologist). Sometimes antihistamines work, but given that he has jaundice I wouldn't be putting any more chemicals in there.

I've my phone consultation with the colorectal surgeon tomorrow am.

No. He is itchy because he is jaundiced. It’s the build up of bilirubin that causes the itch. The jaundice may be because of a blocked common bile duct, not a liver dysfunction.

He tried antihistamines as he takes them anyway for hayfever but they did bugger all. I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you tomorrow.

Re the itch- I had terrible itching with obstetric cholastasis (liver not functioning properly whilst pregnant ) and it was recommended that I use aqueous cream with menthol in it. It didn't stop the itching completely but it took my mind off it for a bit.

Hope you get some answers soon.

How does he feel? Has he any other symptoms? Still jaundiced?

Hope you get answers soon. You might have heard more today if it was a big concern

Still very jaundiced, feeling exhausted but that might be the itching as it disturbs his sleep, his clothes are hanging off him though and he came in tonight and put the heating on as he's so cold all the time.

justasking111 · 15/07/2020 23:17

Is your OH signed off sick now?

Mascotte · 16/07/2020 11:33

Something similar happened to a friend; he was eventually diagnosed with some kind of auto immune hepatitis and is now back to normal, just as a positive story.

bloodywhitecat · 16/07/2020 14:05

No he's still at work until we know what's what, he wants to keep busy.

I have just read up on autoimmune hepatitis, fingers crossed it's something like that.

I turned yellow overnight 12 years ago. Lots of blood tests, scans and a biopsy later I was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis. I remember I lost a lot of weight in the run up to turning yellow, and have itching whenever I have a flare of the disease. It's a manageable disease, though it has its ups and downs. If it turns out to be AIH and you want to chat, let me know

bloodywhitecat · 16/07/2020 17:33

@beepdotbeep Thank you! Can I ask if you felt ill with it? I think the thing that worries me is he doesn't feel ill, maybe a bit of mild nausea now and then but not ill like lots of other people who have liver conditions feel.

OP posts:
beepdotbeep · 16/07/2020 18:00

Nope, hadn't really felt ill at all. I'd been really tired, but just put that down to it being the first term at uni. I'd been sick a few times, no nausea or anything just all of a sudden having to dash to the loo but then being absolutely fine afterwards. Honestly, it took me completely by surprise.

beepdotbeep · 16/07/2020 18:05

Also, just seen you mentioned he was very thirsty. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes three months after turning yellow, and between the turning yellow and the diagnosis I'd been drinking so much water. I used to take a 1.5L bottle of water in to an hour long lecture with me, and have drank nearly all of it by the end. It's pretty unusual to have both things at the same time, but not impossible. Sometimes symptoms that appear at the same time can have different causes.
