Any Americans living in the U.K. who can help with a cooking question?

I use a lot of American recipes (I have an instant pot) and a lot call for canned tomato sauce.

Now I know this is not passatta or purée but a seasoned tomato sauce.

So - my question is what do you buy in the U.K. instead?! I have seen recommendations for tomato soup, would this work? Or maybe something more like Dolmio?

Any advice or suggestions would be great!

Here you go, the ingredients list from a can of tomato sauce.

Just water down some purée and add a few bits! But, you actually can't tell that there's any onion or garlic powder in the sauce when you eat it

I used chopped tomatoes or passata

I use tomatos and tomato purée if needed.

Sorry, tinned tomatoes

I’m not American but I use passata that has garlic and onion added then add a pinch of mixed herbs.

You could try Campbell’s/batchelors condensed tomato soup

Passata plus salt pepper and a pinch of dried Italian herbs

mindutopia · 29/06/2020 19:47

It’s passata. Often it can be a bit more flavoured with added garlic and herbs, but they are basically the same. You can add a bit of tomato purée for added richness if you want.

The only difference I’ve found is you can’t seem to buy it by the massive tin in the UK (it’s for making litres of pasta sauce to feed your 50 closest Italian relatives).

There is also ‘tomato sauce’ in America that is in a jar, but this is like Dolmio and not really something you’d use in cooking.

Thanks everyone.

Weirdly it goes in a recipe for butter chicken curry ... I used some passata and added some salt and garlic powder. It was good!

I wouldn't use dolmio it's not very healthy. Tinned tomatoes or passata, I do both
