Help! Six month old body crunching in sleep and waking himself up?!

Six month old DS has always been a good sleeper but around four months he started doing stomach crunches in his sleep. Putting a little pillow under his legs seemed to help it so I think it was wind

Fast forward to six months hes now doing the stomach crunches as well as flailing arms which then wake him up . Once he's awake he rubs his face and flails his arms even more, which seems to distress him and he gets worked up until he's properly awake.

I was worried about spasms at first but they happen while he's asleep as when as while he wakes, and if I hold his arms down onto his chest they stop and he's not trying to move against me if you see what I mean.

However he has started to get a bit upset when I can't settle him after these little wake ups. He will fall asleep.on me but as soon as I put him back in the cot he wakes and flails and cries

Anyone had this? Is it just one of those things? A developmental stage?

I was wondering if he's outgrowing his small cot we are waiting for a mattress for his proper cot and plan to move him into it next week, don't know if that will help

Any tips gladly received!

My baby starts moving and flailing in his sleep like this when his nappy is too full and he's uncomfortable. A quick change of the nappy and he usually settles down again. Could this be an issue?
