Pocket Money

Sorry if this is a sensitive/offensive question to ask!

My oldest is 5, so just starting to think about pocket money. I'm thinking it would be useful to give her the chance to save up for some of the rubbish toys she wants, and to have her own money for charity things at school when that all gets going again (hopefully!).

I wondered what sort of amount people give at that age?

She's doing a few jobs around the home now, but nothing formalised. Do people find it works to link chores to pocket money, or is better to keep them separate?

Thanks :)

I’ve not specifically linked money to chores, but if she does something unexpected (like she asked to wash the car the other week) then I will give her something for her money box. I think I gave her pocket money from when she was about 6 and my parents did the same. They’re better at remembering to give it to her than I am - she got £1 at that point. She is good at saving for stuff she wants.

We started pocket money when the dc were 8 and 6 and we give them £2 a week. It isn't tied to doing specific chores, but is given on the agreement that the dc are generally helpful around the house.

Thanks both that's helpful. She's nearly 6 so maybe I will start then.

I have been wondering about pocket money. My 6 year old doesn't currently get any. I would like to start it, I think. My mum was really stingey with pocket money when I was growing up and I don't want to be like that. However, I don't want to overcompensate either.
