The end of the back scratcher didn't work either.

Those won’t work because your phone doesn’t react to just pressure, it’s the electrical signal between your skin and the screen that causes it to work (or something like that).

You’ll need to either use your finger or a proper stylus, I’m afraid!

I've pinched the DS pen to try & will have a look at your link now @Iadoremylabrador.

Dd1 found me a stylus pen...goodness knows where from but she says she's had it ages! I think I might invest in one for myself.

Don't bother - you'll almost certainly never need it again, and if you do you'll have lost it by then. Just borrow DD1's if it ever happens.

Finger is the best bet. You should be able to zoom in so you have the full screen to scrawl on.
