Alternative names to "Mummy"

AirJordans · 26/06/2020 22:54

Just interested really as I'm currently expecting my first. I guess an awful lot of UK mothers are known to their DC as "mummy" usually switching to "mum" as they get older. I'm interested in any UK mothers out there for whom this is not the case - so who either chose or ended up with an alternative name? Eg I know a mum whose DC call her "mama".

I’ve been Mama, Mimi, Mummy, Mum and my first name to mine before they were 5. Not sure why Mimi-he just said it one day and it stuck for a while.

MrTumbleTumble · 26/06/2020 23:01

2 mum family here. One of us is Mama and the other Mummy.

I know a few "Mumma"s as well, and a "Ma".

ErrolTheDragon · 26/06/2020 23:03

In parts of the midlands Mom/Mommy is normal.

I call mine Mymy - no idea why?!

SierraOscar · 26/06/2020 23:10

Mom-mom. DD never said mama I was mom-mom for quite a while now she calls me mommy unless she wants something then she reverts back to mom-mom. Brummie here so we use the American spelling.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 26/06/2020 23:14

I’m Mummy or Mumma. Not sure why DD(6) has gone to Mumma but there we go.

DanniArthur · 26/06/2020 23:15

My 2yo DD calls me 'Mama". I've encouraged it as it's easier for her to say and nicer for me to sing random 'mama love you,' songs than 'mummy loves you' lol

rach2713 · 26/06/2020 23:16

My daughter is 17 months and she calls me babs sometimes mummy or mama but mainly Babs lol..

ottermadness · 26/06/2020 23:16

Mama or momma normally. I encourage this as the occasional’mmmmmuuuuuuuuummmmmmmyyyyy’ yelled from upstairs drives me potty!

SarahAndQuack · 26/06/2020 23:18

I think they choose, on the whole!

We called each other 'mama' from the start (I can't remember why) and when DD started to talk she'd say 'mama'. Then DD went to nursery and changed to calling us both 'mummy'.

Now she calls us 'my Sarah' and 'my [DP'sname]' when she is being affectionate (and drops down to plain old first names when she isn't!). We're still occasionally 'mama' though.

My hunch is that she'll just use our first names more as she gets older.

backseatcookers · 26/06/2020 23:18

We are a 'Ma' family. It's a throwback to a couple of generations ago when everyone lived in Dublin. So a mum and dad are Ma and Da. I love it. We also like doing a Nick Cotton Eastenders accent when we phone her. "Ello Ma." Grin

Peta11 · 26/06/2020 23:18

Both my DD'S called me mumma , as they've got older its become mummy / mum. It does revert to mumma when they are poorly or emotional etc but they would write a card To Mumma. Unusual here as Mam/ Ma/Mammy is the norm and also what i called my mother.

TheWitchOfShields · 26/06/2020 23:20

I'm 'mam' not mum. I got mamma and mammy when he was little but it's just mam now. My niece calls her mam 'mama'.

ButterflyWitch · 26/06/2020 23:21

My kids call me Mum Mum Mum Mum Mum Mum Mum Mum Mum Mum Mum Mum Mum

villainousbroodmare · 26/06/2020 23:21

Your name. Far less annoying imo when heard a hundred times a day and especially in a repetitive whinge!

MamaLion1319 · 26/06/2020 23:22

I'm mummy to DS and have gone with Mama for DD.
I call my own mother Ma or mother.

RedLemon · 26/06/2020 23:23

I’m mostly mama, sometimes mummy. I was mummy consistently at one point but when DD2 was born DD1 went into “I’m a baby too” mode and reverted to Mama. I’m also occasionally “MUUUUUUUUUUM!” when being hailed from another room.

CornishTiger · 26/06/2020 23:23

Im mimi to my youngest but he can say mummy. It’s cute and I’m enjoying it whilst it lasts.

nevergoingoutagain · 26/06/2020 23:23

Mum,mummy or mumma. Or the occasional urgh from the teen 🙄

AskingforaBaskin · 26/06/2020 23:24

Mam
Or
Mammy

ErrolTheDragon · 26/06/2020 23:25

Brummie here so we use the American spelling.

Surely it's Americans who use the brummie spelling?Grin

myhandsareverycold · 26/06/2020 23:25

My birth mother (who I met when I was 40) and I struggled to come up with a name. She couldn't be mum or mummy as I called my adoptive mum that so we settled on Ummy. She loves it, I love it and my children do too.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/06/2020 23:28

I’m also occasionally “MUUUUUUUUUUM!” when being hailed from another room.

I find it's more like "Mu -uh - um", the first syllable at a higher pitch than the middle and then back up again.

greentreesdream · 26/06/2020 23:28

If you really don’t want Mummy I’d go with your name. I sympathise as I’m not really a fan of any of the names for mothers! Mother is so formal, mummy is somewhat shrieky and Ma makes me cringe!

GooodMythicalMorning · 26/06/2020 23:28

Moomie Hmm Confused Grin
