Alternative names to "Mummy"

AirJordans · 26/06/2020 22:54

Just interested really as I'm currently expecting my first. I guess an awful lot of UK mothers are known to their DC as "mummy" usually switching to "mum" as they get older. I'm interested in any UK mothers out there for whom this is not the case - so who either chose or ended up with an alternative name? Eg I know a mum whose DC call her "mama".

I’m a mama (although my eldest has an RP accent and it often sounds like Ma’maa Blush). My kids never took to Mummy and now it would just sound weird.

TheGroak · 27/06/2020 09:37

He refers to DH as "my dad" but still calls him "papa"

Same here! DCs call DH Papa but when talking about him to anyone else it’s always ‘Dad’. Strange isn’t it?!

Iwalkinmyclothing · 27/06/2020 09:40

Have just realised that dh usually calls me mama to the DC, but when he is cross with me he says 'your mother'. Ha.

JRM surely doesn't call his parents by any name, at least not directly to their faces?

He probably has to send a note via Nanny if he wants to make an appointment to see them.

LindaLyndell · 27/06/2020 10:04

I'm Mama, sometimes Ma if he can't be bothered to say the full word 😂😂

TwoZeroTwoZero · 27/06/2020 10:20

I just get the usual "mum" and "mummy" but I call my own mother "mam". I sometimes wonder if it's a Yorkshire or a northern thing?

Willowkins · 27/06/2020 10:24

My DD calls me Mumsies. I think it's from the old Crystal Maze TV show and just stuck. DS calls me Mum.

MrsJBaptiste · 27/06/2020 10:24

@BakewellGin1

Youngest DS doesn't speak other then babble yet...

Oldest I was always Mammy or Mam...

I will be in the minority but I cannot stand Mummy or Mum... We actively seek out occasion cards that say Mam for my own...

Each to their own and what suits though. Everyone is different

Definitely, each to their own ☺

I can't stand 'Mam' or (even worse) 'Mammy' but get that it's a regional thing - Yorkshire/North East.

Mintjulia · 27/06/2020 10:28

My brother called our mum Mater. It made me want to hit him Grin

golddustwomen · 27/06/2020 10:31

Both of mine started off calling me mama. It's now mommy, 6 year old occasionally calls me mom. Midlands!

morethanafortnight · 27/06/2020 10:35

Got enough information for your article yet OP?

StoneSourFan · 27/06/2020 10:42

I'm from the north east and it's mostly Mam or Mammy xx

Mammyloveswine · 27/06/2020 11:37

Mammy here! I'm in the north east... my husband will refer to me as "your mother" so sometimes my 4 year old will refer to me as "my mother" which always makes me laugh!

Hollyhobbi · 27/06/2020 11:47

@Mintjulia we have a couple of Mater Hospitals here in Ireland. Or as we say in Dublin, The Mater Hospital. There's one in Cork City too.

Mintjulia · 27/06/2020 11:59

Yes, it’s Latin. So I guess hospitals were originally connected to the church.

Toobuktim · 27/06/2020 12:02

I’m a mama mainly, the older ones now call me mum, but I’m happy with either. Never really liked being called mummy Grin

MeadowHay · 27/06/2020 12:02

I'm "mummy" but I'm dual heritage and have always called my own mum "mama" as that's "mum" in my other language. My mum is actually my white British side but she wanted to encourage our language and culture from my DF's side so was happy with that. I always thought that's what I'd want to be called to but when I had DD it just didn't feel 'right'. I'm not anywhere near fluent in the other language and in my head "mama" is MY DM and I just couldn't call myself it. Dunno if that's is weird or what! I would be totally fine with DD choosing to call me it in future, or any other variation on the 'mum' theme though. "Mama" in my other language is pronounced more like "maa-maaa" iyswim.

FizzyGreenWater · 27/06/2020 12:03

Mumma for a long time, no idea why, now mum, also now they're older it's Motherkins and occasionally MoneyPot Hmm

AirJordans · 27/06/2020 14:46

@morethanafortnight what do you mean?

OP posts:
HildegardeCrowe · 27/06/2020 14:49

My 20 year old DD still calls me mama. It makes my heart melt.

AirJordans · 27/06/2020 14:51

For those who are known as "mama" can I check how this is pronounced to

  1. Mama to rhyme with Gamma??
  1. Mama to rhyme with Summer??
  1. Or is it Mama in the posh way to scan with "hurrah"?!

I had a negative relationship with my own mother and so I'm suddenly not feeling being known as Mum or Mummy anymore as it's what I used to call her...

OP posts:
MrTumbleTumble · 27/06/2020 20:39

We're in the Midlands so we pronounce Mama like Momma. So I think you need an option 4!

MitziK · 27/06/2020 21:59

DD2 called me Mama. It was her first word and I was perfectly happy with it, seeing as she had never been told it - she would have heard Mummy all the flaming time and the CF ex hated it, as he thought it was me trying to be posh. When she was about 14, it turned into Mumma in text messages, but cards still had Mama written in them.

MojoJojo71 · 27/06/2020 22:14

I’m mum but I call my mother Mam

ItsNotAGameOfSubbuteoMatthew · 27/06/2020 22:16

I'm mumma despite them being 5+ and perfectly capable of staying mummy!
