Alternative names to "Mummy"

Just interested really as I'm currently expecting my first. I guess an awful lot of UK mothers are known to their DC as "mummy" usually switching to "mum" as they get older. I'm interested in any UK mothers out there for whom this is not the case - so who either chose or ended up with an alternative name? Eg I know a mum whose DC call her "mama".

My Bf calls his parents by their first names and always has.

Imissmoominmama · 27/06/2020 03:13

My youngest called me Mama when he was a toddler, but now it’s Mum, or my (shortened) name if he’s being cheeky Grin.

The eldest calls me Mum, Mother or Mummy, depending on how he’s feeling (he’s 32).

Middle child calls me Mum. She has never wavered!

Moonshinemisses · 27/06/2020 03:34

3 of mine call me bubba, started when they were babies and just stuck. My Eldest has taken to calling me mummy G , started a few years ago not sure where it came from. They all call their dad pops.

Are all the mammies (mammy) Irish? I'm usually mammy or mam. They tried calling me ma but I told them I'm not a sheep😂. When my youngest was in the creche she called me mama as her little pal was French and called her mother that. My ex husband used to say mummy or mum which would be considered posh in Ireland.

Bloodybridget · 27/06/2020 04:18

My brother and I went from calling our parents "mummy and daddy", to "mum and dad", and then we started calling our father "Pop" from a strip "Pop, Dick and Harry" in a comic, which drove him nuts - "Don't call me Pop!" - poor bloke! In my late teens I switched to using her name for my mother, not as a distancing thing, I loved her very much.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 27/06/2020 04:42

My Dd’s call me Mumma, mum or mummo.

PurBal · 27/06/2020 05:04

My grandpa was Poppa. Or Popsicle. Interesting thread.

I’m Mama - my DS are 12 and 8 and I’ve always been Mama right from the start.

I’ve overheard them saying ‘my mum’ to their friends but they’ve only ever called me Mama.

Camomila · 27/06/2020 06:07

I do get called mummy and mum, but also mamma (the Italian word), and 'mummy firstname'

DH gets dad/daddy/daddy firstname/and just his first name.

SiaPR · 27/06/2020 06:10

Mama by my youngest which turned to my first name as she grew. My first name by eldest since the minute he could talk. Never anything else. I like both. I hate mum

molifly14 · 27/06/2020 06:12

I'm mumma or Mummy depending how tired he is

Gumbo · 27/06/2020 06:19

I'm Mum, but DS did once try calling me Gumbo to see what my reaction would be. I explained to him that he was literally the only person in the world who could legitimately call me Mum, and that shows the special relationship we have. He really liked that fact and I'm still Mum Smile

joystir59 · 27/06/2020 06:25

Mum

PaperMonster · 27/06/2020 07:20

My nine year old calls me mummy, mum and mama.

Thuglife · 27/06/2020 07:45

I’m usually just Mummy or Mum but sometimes Mumcheeks- no idea where that came from Grin

GreenLeafTurnip · 27/06/2020 07:45

I'm mama but he is only 17 months and we live in eastern Europe so it's the equivalent of mum or mummy in English.

Clawdy · 27/06/2020 08:16

Years ago my friend wanted her little boy to call her by her first name. So she was Mary to him. Then she started to work at the nursery he attended, where the children called the staff Auntie Sue, Auntie Jan and so on. To her horror, her son started calling her Auntie Mary! She decided Mummy sounded better.....Grin

MuchTooTired · 27/06/2020 08:31

I’m mama to my DTs but they’re only 2.5 so I assume I’ll become mummy then mum as they get older. I love being called mama though, and it’s a definite improvement on being called dog by my dd! Hmm

BakewellGin1 · 27/06/2020 08:45

Youngest DS doesn't speak other then babble yet...

Oldest I was always Mammy or Mam...

I will be in the minority but I cannot stand Mummy or Mum... We actively seek out occasion cards that say Mam for my own...

Each to their own and what suits though. Everyone is different

myhandsareverycold · 27/06/2020 08:52

@greentreesdream

She is my mother so it seemed somewhat disrespectful to call her by her first name. My children knew she was their grandmother but Granny and Grandma was already taken. Ummy was a great compromise and suits us all.

Justkeeprollingalong · 27/06/2020 09:08

@Hollyhobbi it's Mam or Mammy in the North East too. My mother was Mam but my husband is a southerner so he called me Mummy to the girls and that stuck. I'm now usually Mum but occasionally Ma to the eldest and Mumma to the youngest. My family up North think we are posh' 😂

Pogmella · 27/06/2020 09:20

Mummy in general. Sometimes Mumma or ‘The Mumpster’ whivh started after she mispronounced Lobster as Lumpster.

Icanttakethiscrapanymore · 27/06/2020 09:23

My ds 21 months calls me “ama” instead of mama. He’s not really talking yet and is probably going to need speech therapy but I’m hoping “ama” sticks as he says it so lovingly.

OohKittens · 27/06/2020 09:25

Mammy/mam here in west wales

firstimemamma · 27/06/2020 09:26

My ds calls me 'mamma' and his daddy 'daddy' (he's nearly 2). I love it! Congratulations on the baby.
