Started a new one.

Need to adhere to guidelines this time though.

I'd wondered about car boot sales, was talking to neighbour the other day about them. Outdoors, so that's good, but lots of 'other people's stuff', to touch. Which doesn't bother me in the slightest, but would be a good reason not to allow them.
I miss charity shops.

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 28/06/2020 00:27

Been considering a visit to Chessington after someone mentioned it earlier. Its only an hour away but we've never been. I don't like crowds or queueing for more than 10 minutes for anything. We did Legoland once on a chilly rainy week day and that was manageable, but hour long queues for rides I won't be going on does not appeal!

Will the covid restrictions make this worse or better? Fewer people perhaps, but more queuing?

FizzFan · 28/06/2020 00:35

Imagine social distancing on a roller coaster

Honestly, this is all a complete farce. Time for this crap to come to an end.

I made the mistake of going to Alton Towers on a sunny, summer Saturday for a friend's birthday one week before my wedding. The kind of day when all the major rides took over an hoùr to queue (and 90 mins to even get the car out of the car par). We finally got within a couple of turns from our turn, when someone's long suffering bladder found the ride too stimulating after all that waiting. The staff sloshed it all down with disinfectant. I remember the look of horror when the people about to go on realised which seat they were in line for...

There often are seats out of action so that probably wouldn't be too bad. I'd hope the queues are no worse than normal, but social distancing would make them look disconcerting, but move up quickly.

@FizzFan

I actually feel quite buoyed watching old Glasto sets tonight

This is the life people want, they aren’t going to be prepared to put up with all this pish indefinitely, to save the NHS or whatever and ultimately the government are going to have to just deal with that, whether PEOPLE ARE DYING or not.

Yes! I've had that same feeling watching them. Particularly Beyonce the other night. That was uplifting.

Coldplay did an amazing set in 2016 I think that was on last night but I fell asleep! Luckily I recorded it I think.

Orangeblossom78 · 28/06/2020 08:26

The car bot sale is on here today and they went last week said it was not very busy but first one. Going today if the weather is OK for it.

CruCru · 28/06/2020 08:35

There’s a thing in the Times today about children getting fatter during lockdown. It’s not exactly surprising - the playgrounds are locked up and children are unwelcome pretty much everywhere.

Dowser · 28/06/2020 08:37

Alton Towers..for first husbands 40th . Grim. Never to be repeated.
Weather awful. Queues awful.
Plus I hate roller coasters.
But I understand the appeal.

Dowser · 28/06/2020 08:39

Calling Wales

This might be worth a look to get your points of view across

Crucru DS has certainly passed between solid rugby playing build to chunky and its heartbreaking to see. The absolute best thing I have done is to encourage him to join his pals in a daily illicit football game which he has started going to.

They used a council run facility and he said all the courts were full. The police came along and moved them on one day, but just said they had to because they weren't social distancing.

We live in a dystopian universe where people are free to wander round garden centres and M&S clothes department, but playing football is a crime. Actually we live in Scotland, but it feels pretty similar.

No wonder DCs are overweight - they're used to getting all their incidental exercise from walking into school and playing with their mates. Doubtless negligent parents will be blamed for them gaining weight - it's already happening on mumsnet.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 28/06/2020 08:46

My village had a garage sale yesterday, unfortunately I only found out Friday night and wasn’t going to pull it off in 12 hours to set up a table in the rain... nice idea though.

dowser I took myself off to Disney world once. Vile. Kept missing the turn off and going up and down the turnpike paying for the privilege of going the wrong way. Inside the park was beyond grim and I left just after lunch. My children know if they want to go to a theme park they’d better suck up to someone else’s parents.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 28/06/2020 08:48

My eldest has actually lost a few pounds because he’s using the trampoline to calm himself (autism). But it’s really hard to keep the treats in check - this life is fucking miserable and if a cornetto brings a bit of pleasure...

Orangeblossom78 · 28/06/2020 08:53

Good article today on the fear mongering

Drivingdownthe101 · 28/06/2020 08:53

Mine haven’t changed weight wise but they’re still at the age where they bound around everywhere and don’t sit still so don’t need organised activity to keep active. We also invested in a trampoline in the first week of lockdown. Must be much harder for older kids.

Nihiloxica · 28/06/2020 08:57

My kids haven't gained weight but their aerobic fitness levels have plummeted. This is so bad for them in every way.

rookiemere · 28/06/2020 08:58

We went to Alton Towers when DS was younger, I was pleasantly surprised by the big garden and semi decent food stands. Can't remember the name of the hell that had Thomas Land inside it.

Very glad though that the young people are going to AT on our England trip so DS gets to go, but I don't have to.

There’s a thing in the Times today about children getting fatter during lockdown. It’s not exactly surprising - the playgrounds are locked up and children are unwelcome pretty much everywhere.

I must admit I laughed out loud at this. What exactly did they think would happen?

Predictable comments about ‘blame the parents’ etc but not all parents are fit enough for a variety of reasons or have access to the space to exercise their children during lockdown. Fine if you are a fit and active and live in a rural area, less so if you have mobility problems and live in an inner city towerblock. Children need a lot of exercise not a quick walk round the block. I’m fit and I can’t keep up with my kids running for example.

But yeah let’s open the pubs and keep the swimming pools shut with most sport banned. And then be surprised by children on screens getting fatter. Then talk about a ‘war on obesity’ 🤦🏻‍♀️🤔

MagdaS · 28/06/2020 09:03

I’m drinking more often and exercising less. I actually weigh less than at the start of lockdown as stress and anxiety knock out my appetite. But I am flabbier round the middle and have definitely lost muscle tone.

I drank every day apart from Monday last week, a combination of having a friend over one night, DH celebrating Liverpool winning the title, and a beer with my gaming. This week needs to be different.

Similar here. I need a couple of alcohol free days this week at least.
BlackberryViolet · 28/06/2020 09:09

Dowser, glad you got home ok. We were already at the car with coffee when the worst hit so sat and watched. Then half an hour of lovely sun watching another storm head for us. Dh is sick of driving down the A19 so took the scenic route through Bilsdale, storm 3 hit on the outskirts of Teesside. Then I fell asleep in front of Foyles WarBlush

He’s got to drive down it again today as we are booked in for the gardens at Harlow Carr. No food open so I’m taking a picnic. And we have no children with us!! I’ve warned him that even if it pisses down we are going. I just hope it doesn’t turn into another pale imitation of life through. Harrogate yesterday didn’t feel right. Eating sandwiches sheltering in shop doorways, so much still closed. And none of the stuff we bought for dd fits her so it all has to go back

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 28/06/2020 09:11

I’m drinking more than I should (normally I don’t drink on Monday to Thursday evenings unless I’m out with friends), but I have managed to keep exercising; I’m making DD do Jillian Michaels DVDs with me. She needs something to tell her therapist when she’s older....

Nihiloxica · 28/06/2020 09:14

I got really fat since lockdown. I have started eating more sensibly and lost a few pounds last week, but I'm still really fat.

It has always seemed mad to me that in the face of a virus that is more dangerous if you are Vitamin D deficient or fat that we locked ourselves indoors and restricted exercise.

We've been making the population as vulnerable to the virus as possible for months.

CruCru · 28/06/2020 09:16

rookiemere Sounds like our sons have similar builds. I have one child who gets described on here as having a “typical 70s figure” - so pretty much straight up and down. My other child is a rugby player shaped boy who can tend towards stoutness if we don’t keep an eye on what he eats and how much he moves.

Teateaandmoretea · 28/06/2020 09:21

Yeah diet/ alcohol consumption hasn’t been great but I’ve been cycling 100+ miles a week plus doing long walks. I feel fit and don’t have a spare tyre over my jeans . But I’m kind of lucky that I’m a cyclist anyway so it was logical to keep going with that.

Teateaandmoretea · 28/06/2020 09:21

And cancer, and any other virus 🙄
