Booked Cornwall holiday for 4th July - having second thoughts

On Sunday we booked 6 nights in a rural hotel on the Lizard peninsula - you had been looking at self catering, but there wasn't much available and we booked an isolated hotel on the coast path.

It looks wonderful and you can imagine how excited we were. We have done a very strict lockdown and had everything delivered etc. I have been to the shops 4 times in last 3 months! We've lost a family member to the virus and homeschooling has been a grind. So the prospect of escaping and getting an early holiday in was very exciting for us Planning to drive very early to avoid busy roads and then organise our days early so we can go on the beach and swim before a late breakfast and perhaps again in the evening. Lots of walks, reading etc.

But now we're getting worried that everyone has had the same thought and it's maybe not such a good idea... I know west Cornwall isn't Bournemouth, but those photos are horrible. Our hotel are adamant that we are welcome, but are they just desperate to get business off the ground again? We would lose 2/3 of the holiday cost.

I need to unravel my thoughts a bit. Please don't shoot me down, only helpful, kind advice please. Smile

I would still go. Is it Housel Bay?

peoniesarejustperfect · 25/06/2020 15:52

Hi Mrs S, it's Mullion Cove but we looked at Housel Bay.

I think you should go. What's the worse case scenario? You feel uncomfortable and come back after 2 days?

We have booked our caravan for 4th July. Before Covid booked. Dh still recons we should go. Worse case scenario he says, is that we just go to check it out, give it a quick wipe/clean, because we normally would have done that ages ago, after it being stored for the winter.

I love in Cornwall and having driven past the local beaches in Falmouth, they are no way near as busy as Bournemouth. In fact we are lucky as there are a lot of smaller beaches e.g Poldhu which may not be as busy.

lorn195 · 25/06/2020 15:58

Argh I meant live in Cornwall.

Fressia123 · 25/06/2020 15:59

Perranporth was half empty yesterday afternoon I think you'll be fine!

Inforthelonghaul · 25/06/2020 16:00

There’s plenty of coast, just steer clear of the busy beaches and it will be lovely.

peoniesarejustperfect · 25/06/2020 16:27

Thank you so much for your thoughts and advice.

Oblo - my DH is saying something similar to yours - that we can clean the moment we arrive (he knows me well) and always come back if it's too busy. Hope you have a fab break.

Lorn and Fressia local advice is very reassuring!

Inforthelonghaul - that's what we are hoping. Fingers crossed.

I live in Cornwall and I would honestly still go on your holiday if I were you.
I was in Port Isaac last Sunday and I only saw a handful of people. There is enough space to spread out!
Let’s hope the wonderful weather comes back for your stay!

peoniesarejustperfect · 25/06/2020 18:14

Thank you Houseworkeravoider - so good to hear from people who live there! I hope we get the weather too...

I feel much better about it all, and calm has returned. We've just been talking about it again and decided to def go and make the most of the wide open spaces and big skies. Thank you for all the chat. Flowers

Definetely still come. I was at a beach yesterday and it was still very quiet. The place where you are going is beautiful. Lots of walks you can do. No matter what the weather Get your waterproofs on and get out there

Scruffyoak · 26/06/2020 11:51

Perranporth, which does get busy but the house is right next to the beach so will be easy to go early since my kids wake at 5am lol x
