Stupid question about baking sheets

Am I right in thinking that baking sheets are supposed to slot straight into your oven, rather than sitting on another rack?

I've always used them on a shelf in the oven op.

Sometimes the oven comes with a big enamel baking sheet that slots in, my Neff does. Otherwise you choose from a multitude of sizes and use the racks to put them on.

I've seen ones that slot in but they are not that common. I think of a baking sheet as a a flat tray with no lip/rim. I've got several different sized ones.

Not unless they come as part of your oven imo. Normal baking sheets that you buy just sit on your oven shelf.

RedCatBlueCat · 24/06/2020 11:05

I'd put them on a shelf. Then the hot air can move around more easily. If they were solid right across the oven, how would the hot air get from the flame/element to stuff on the top shelf?

winterisstillcoming · 24/06/2020 14:08

I normally put them on the shelf but have bought some recently that are coincidentally are the correct size to slot in.

Thanks all! I'll get a smaller sheet and sit it on the wire rack then. I'd just read about 14 million baking sheet reviews, where they all go on about the difference in steel vs aluminium vs insulated aluminium and I thought, surely if all that stuff is so important, it makes a difference what you're putting it onto? But the wire shelf would seem fine.
