Is violent crime increasing?

It appears I'm reading daily about stabbing a and shootings across England. (I'm sure it's whole UK but it's England I've read about)

I do t remember reading about this level of violent crime in a daily basis?

I wondered if there was a correlation with lockdown and pandemic?

Either - that the disenfranchised are even more so and anger has increased resulting in violent crime or whether this is usual (and horrific if it is) but because not a lot else is happening with the pandemic we're hearing about it more?

I'm actually becoming quite concerned about the civil unrest not only in the UK but globally.

No.

Long term it is decreasing, though this is slowing in recent years.

In April, the number of (reported) crimes fell due to lockdown, and there being fewer people out.

That's reassuring!

I wonder why I seem to notice more?

I wonder if it's reported more because other than Covid not much else is happening or maybe because I'm wfh more often I'm just reading news more?

No. And its decreased a lot during lockdown.

itsgettingweird · 23/06/2020 13:19

I understand it did during lockdown but it seems for past 10 days - everyday there's been a major incident of stabbing or shooting.

Maybe I'm just noticing the news more?

theres been at least 2 stabbings in our area in the last few days
and the killing of wildlife, evil bastards

WinningEveryDay · 23/06/2020 15:24

Yes you're noticing the news more and once you take note of something, you notice it even more.

sirfredfredgeorge · 23/06/2020 15:35

The reason you would have noticed is that the type of violent crime that has gone down, is the type that is mostly not reported on much, drunken fights, "gang" crime etc. is rarely reported much it's seen as "normal", like Road Traffic deaths and similar. The rarer kind of deaths that do make the news are not covered in the headline statistics so they don't say if there's been an increase or decrease.

Good point sir so I guess overall crime is down.

But I'm still wondering if it's normal for stabbing sand shootings daily.

Especially shooting.

Good point though about once you've noticed you notice more!
