Child maintenance question.

If a school leaver decides to defer their college entry for a year due to the threat of covid disrupting the first year of their A levels, as it's disrupted their GCSEs, and they get a full time job, am I correct in thinking child maintenance doesn't lawfully have to be paid? And what would happen if they then went to college after that deferred year? Would CM payments need to start again?

I'm asking what the law says, not what morals say as they are totally different things unfortunately.
