What tastes do you have now that you could never admit to your teen self?

80s teen here. Had to like Teardrop Explodes and the like then. If I went back in time I could never visit my teen self and admit I like Disco, Jazz Funk and like a lot of the Bee Gees etc. My 14 year old self would have been horrified Shockmy best friend would have disowned me for a start!

Sensible footwear.

Seriously, long hikes. I was a slug as a child; I'll nip up a hill at a moment's notice nowadays.

Geraniums.

Skinny jeans! 90s teen here - was a grunge / indie kid who lived in flared cords and surf jeans.

tobee · 20/06/2020 23:26

Funny you should say that about geraniums, franke, my mum used to "over winter" her geraniums in my bedroom when I grew up and I hated them. And hated the smell.

And yet, today, I took this photo of my garden to share with my mum!:-

Clotted cream is delicious and I hated it as a child. Off topic but the theme to Last of the summer wine makes me sad every time I hear it.. Im late 40s and I bloody hated it when I was young

AgeLikeWine · 20/06/2020 23:37

ABBA.

When I was a teenager, I thought I was far too cool to like ABBA. You would never catch me dancing round my handbag to Dancing Queen. I was into the Smiths and New Order. Now, of course, I recognise the genius of Benny & Bjorn’s songs, and the wonder of Agnetha’s voice.

I found myself listening to Gardeners Question time the other day. Teen me would be horrified.

ExpletiveDelighted · 20/06/2020 23:44

80s teen here too.
Flat shoes.

Listening to Gardeners Question Time.
Browsing magazines in WH Smith
Spending Sunday afternoons at National Trust gardens (oddly my teens are still happy to do this).
Going to teashops.

My inner 14 year old still doesn't let me listen to Radio 2 though. And I still don't listen to a lot of stuff I thought was deeply uncool back in the day (eg New Romantic bands).

ExpletiveDelighted · 20/06/2020 23:44

Ha, x-posted about GQT.

I still can't listen to Radio 4 as that was my mum listened to.

My 21 year old ds has no hang ups about his musical tastes and likes stuff from any era; criteria being "it's good!" . Wish I could have been as confident when I was his age.

Clothes from M&S. If my mum bought me something from there when I was a teen, I would cut the label out so none of my friends could ever come across the incriminating evidence by chance.

ExpletiveDelighted · 20/06/2020 23:56

My mum is a R4 listener. I do listen to it sometimes but I swear I will never, ever get sucked into The Archers.

Corneliusmurphy · 20/06/2020 23:59

‘Mum coats’ I would not be seen dead in anything sensible, now I’m looking for one that covers my bum and has a hood...

redbigbananafeet · 21/06/2020 00:18

Mr MagooInTheLoo I think that's because it was shown on Sunday nights. I always associate it with the Sunday blues when you knew you'd school then next day.

FunTimes2020 · 21/06/2020 00:27

My teen self would have been horrified to learn that her future self would happily wear wellies and a sensible mac! Teen self would rather get wet! Grin

FunTimes2020 · 21/06/2020 00:29

Teen self would also have been saddened to learn that comfort finally triumphs over fashion... 😂
