Minuscule froglets

I came across these three at a park tonight, luckily avoiding treading on them. The brown is quite a bit bigger than the grey and black ones.

They are so amazingly cute aren't they?

DeborahAnnabelToo · 20/06/2020 21:33

I think they might be toads! Were they hopping or crawling?

Could the brown one be a toadlet?

I once came across hundreds and hundreds of froglets around a pond, it was quite extraordinary. We had to leave as it was almost impossible to move without stepping on them.

WildRosie · 20/06/2020 21:38

Come to think of it, the brown one could well be a common toad, given its larger size and the fact it was motionless. The other two kept hopping about so I was lucky to get the pictures I did.

We grew them in my classroom a few years ago from spawn. Once they became froglets we had to move them to a new tank with rocks in. That was fun! They are jumpy little buggers! We named one Steve because he kept trying to get up to the top of the tank to get out the air holes! I still have some photos of them somewhere.

We did have to try to hide the fact that some of the tadpoles were carnivores and would eat their weaker peers.

I wouldn't have known they were even down there if a couple walking towards me hadn't warned me (that's a human couple BTW, not two amphibians). Goodness knows how many have been flattened or gobbled up by birds.

When I was a kid we went for a canoe trip in france, on nearly every river bank there were hundreds of tiny frogs. So cute and very difficult to avoid. Mostly stony though so not too bad.

I’ve got no frog wisdom to contribute but wish to congratulate you on your excellent spelling of the word ‘minuscule’.

WildRosie · 20/06/2020 22:52

Thankyou, wombat. One does try but it is an easy word to misspell and understandably so.
