The north needs HS2

There is poor employment in the North with little opportunities for jobs or career development. We need big business up here and and quick travel down to the Capital. I understand the enviromental issues and the reason for the forthcoming march from Birmingham. What do we do in the backwater whilst Cental England flourishes. Bring on HS2 I am all for it.

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

Why are we encouraging people to commute? Why not invest locally?
That is the job market Thatcher created, my daughter had to go 300 miles get a proper uni education and work career, my town, well bar work, shop work not much else except care work.

Where do you live, op?

[quote newyearnoeu]@lisajane1966 Wales doesnt have free university education and haven't for at least twenty years... or if we have I need to work out what this "student loan" I've been paying off is really for....Hmm

There was a brief few years around the mid 00s when we got part of our tuition fees subsidised but this came with caveats such as having to stay in Wales to study etc. Even that ended in 2016.

@newyearnoeu: my mistake thanks for updating me.

@annabel85 they won't be doing that from the northeast, no. It takes over 3 hours to get to Manchester from here.

@lisajane1966 you are a pretty poor bot and I claim my five pounds.

FizzyGreenWater · 21/06/2020 00:25

HS2 won't make a blind bit of difference to the north.

It is an utter vanity project and already completely out of step with what's needed. Post Corona, that's going to be even more the case.

PelicanPuffin · 21/06/2020 00:31

HS2 will be a white elephant. They would be better off linking different parts of the north.

@TrustTheGeneGenie

Where do you live, op?
West Yorkshire, the land that businesses forgot.

I live in Bradford, and it's been having a little renaissance recently. I certainly don't want hs2 for many reasons already outlined here. The environmental impact will be devastating all along the route, the existing train lines need updating and restoring. Hs2 will drain money from where it is needed most just so the government can go through with it's promise.

Anywaythewindisblowing · 21/06/2020 16:12

The land that businesses forgot? Where are you getting that from?

FliesandPies · 21/06/2020 16:19

It was bad enough before but I really don't see how it can be justified now with the coming financial shit-storm. It's just not important enough for the colossal amount of money required.

@lisajane1966 you are a pretty poor bot and I claim my five pounds.

Either that, or someone with English as a second language who has only just moved up from London. HS3 would have been a better option for the north than HS2.
