Joy sponge? what is the phrase

Drivingdownthe101 · 20/06/2020 18:02

To be fair, I don’t really think we should change to venomous, misery-riddled, joy sucking hag. I’m not sure Mumsnet would let that one stand, for a start!

Orangeblossom78 · 20/06/2020 18:02

On Mumsnet madness on twitter they did a really good picture of one looked a bit like Mrs Doyle from Father Ted.

The government’s continuing dismissal of the needs of children is really fucking me off. If pubs, theme parks, gyms, spas, hotels and restaurants can open from 1st July, why the hell can’t playgrounds?

Nothing compares with the brevity and accuracy of Dementor without being unnecessarily rude.

I say we keep it and just change the thread title reference to AD, as in this one

Ibake · 20/06/2020 18:18

I agree @nanny. MNHQ know who we are and where we are and have mostly left us in peace which tells me they know we mean no harm. Plus, there honestly is no other word that quite captures the essence of the behaviour!

Pleasedontdothat · 20/06/2020 18:20

@HesterShaw1

Glad you're home Jourdain.

I just watched a BBC piece on what went wrong in Lombardy. Does anyone know why this region was so overwhelmed so quickly and so comparatively soon? Lombardy in particular?

@HesterShaw1 I’ve seen some speculation that it’s because that area of Italy has some of the worst air pollution in Europe - even before coronavirus it had very high levels of respiratory disease
HesterShaw1 · 20/06/2020 18:23

Yes I've seen that, and that the geography doesn't help - cold Alpine air sinking onto the Lombard plain. Or something.

But I was just wondering why there in particular so soon compared to other places with equally or nearly as bad air quality? I heard one thing about the link between Milan and the Chinese garment factories producing the fashion - literally no idea how true that is or otherwise. Sounds like it might be rubbish...?

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 20/06/2020 18:26

I’ve never seen or read a HP thing, but I was googling the perfect word for my ex-husband using the phrase “sucks the joy out of life” - and Google told me it was dementor. I still couldn’t pick one out of a lineup (if they are in fact actual physical beings of type) - but I recognise their eyore tendencies.

My exH is a fun sponge too Insane, despite being generally a decent enough bloke.

Maybe they would get on?

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 20/06/2020 18:39

They would need to operate from a darkened room and silence except for grunting at a console.

I hadn’t realised how bad it was until I got all my furniture out of storage (5 months) and found a bottle of champagne he’d refused to share for my 40th birthday. Twat.

HesterShaw1 · 20/06/2020 18:45

It's funny how it creeps up isn't it? I was reading something on MN about how lots of women have jokes and laughs with their partners and what things they share etc....and realised that for us it was just boring practicalities and bickering. He never wanted to do anything fun. It had become impossible for him to chat to people in a normal social way because he never did anything fun any more, and had no small talk. On the odd occasion we did go out with friends, he would be such a doom merchant it was embarrassing. Obviously he was having some kind of breakdown and I was desperately worried at the time, but still wasn't prepared to feel responsible for it, like he was convinced I was.

Since we split up we are both much happier even though I am very lonely because of lockdown. The thought of him having been here through all of this makes me whimper with horror to be honest!

BogRollBOGOF · 20/06/2020 18:46

I went through Bakewell the other week, but I didn't stop off for any puddings.

I lurve Bakewell pudding, not to be mistaken for the Common Bakewell Tart Grin

Anyway, had a good afternoon... went to a different park which we haven't been to since last autumn's floods, then up a junction up the motorway to Decathlon. No issues going in with the disease-ridden vectors (DCs or DH Grin ) DCs have been upgraded on trainers. DS2 didn't get the much hoped for scooter as he didn't like the colour of the only one in stock (don't tell him I've ordered one as he's sulking on the sofa... I think about life in general) and we finished off our recreation/ retail rampage with a cone of chips.

DS2 has been really sulky and whingey for days to the point where I think I need to put out an appeal for any classmates to play football in the park with him and hope that there isn't a spawn of dementors on the group. We haven't been tested with return to school yet. I know some of the other year groups have been very cagey. There are some KW children in.

Ah, there you are.

I have just passed a big family group having a picnic on the green. They are not 2m apart from each other and there are about 12 of them.. we smiled and said hello. So normal.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 20/06/2020 18:48

I expect they all live in the same house Crucru . Definitely Smile

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 20/06/2020 18:48

Yes, that’s been very clear to me too - this would all have been so much worse locked up WITH him.

I think divorce solicitors will be “brisk” after all of this.

TheGreatWave · 20/06/2020 18:50

Well I have had a man in my house who is not part of my household, Shock hopefully all systems go for the new conservatory though.

I popped to our little hardware come general bits and bobs store earlier. First you have to work out who is queuing for that shop, who is queuing for the butcher's and who is just randomly standing. Shop limited to two at a time so a couple of us stood outside. Man comes asks us if he can just stand his bike near the window and then just walks into the shop Confused (chucked out straight away) Then someone comes out, masked and pulls up her skirt to open the door with. How on earth will that be better than just using hand gel after?

LivinLaVidaLoki · 20/06/2020 18:57

I'm sat with DS right now making fathers day "vouchers" hes getting 3
1 for lunch at his favourite pub when lockdown is over
1 for some "golf stuff"
1 for an ice cream from the local parlour (going to take him for that tomorrow)

DS is 9 and has figured out that its rubbish we can't go to the pub and DH cant decide what bit of golf stuff he needs.

So as well as the above and a box of maltesers and home made malteser rocky road we've been pretty busy this evening.

Made me smile when he made the pub voucher though as he looked over really wistfully and said "wouldn't life be nicer if Boris would open the pubs for dads on fathers day, dads love pubs"

I just gave him a little squeeze and said "we all do sweetheart"

LivinLaVidaLoki · 20/06/2020 18:58

It was equal parts touching and hilarious.

SomewhereEast · 20/06/2020 19:03

@HesterShaw1 I likewise read an article way back linking high levels of air pollution to bad outbreaks. If I remember correctly the issue was that people were more likely to have weakened / damaged respiratory systems. It explained why Milan & surrounds have particular air pollution issues (something about the geography of the region!) but I can't remember it all now. Apparently there were quite close business links with Wuhan & surrounds - there were direct flights between Wuhan & Milan I think.

ExpletiveDelighted · 20/06/2020 19:03

Spudlet - I hid AIBU several years ago for the sake of my mental health but like you I sometimes get sucked in via Trending on the desktop version.

PickAChew · 20/06/2020 19:03

The 2 biggest Dementors on my SM are both men who I usually have a lot of time for.

More of the aubergine and courgette curry was consumed, tonight, along with a Dahl, some boiled egg and a pack of markses chicken pakoras that had been in the freezer far longer than is reasonable. Delicious.

And I decisively threw awau a pack of chana Dahl. Never managed to cook it particularly soft but I soaked this batch for 8 hours, starting off in boiling water, then cooked it. And cooked it. And cooked it. After an hour and a quarter it was still crumbly, so I said sod it and binned the lot. I'd probably have done that 3 months ago, if it wasn't for lockdown.
