Interesting about Lombardy. I wonder then for all the angst about people with symptoms not being admitted to hospital, if actually that was (within the beauty of luck hindsight) the right thing to do.

I have often wondered this...that after a year or two have gone by, maybe might the UK government idiotically stumbled accidentally into the least worst course of action? With the benefit of hindsight.

Could be totally and utterly wrong of course.

Jourdain11 · 20/06/2020 20:08

In February, we had a mini-lockdown at work because somebody who had come back from skiing brought it in! He was whisked off to the hospital in London with the special infectious diseases unit (is it Royal Free?) because it still had that special disease status. He was very mildly ill. A week later, all the people who'd caught it off him were told to stay home and take paracetamol 😆

But really, there is no need for not-particularly-sick people to be in a hospital, just because it is Covid.

I always found it weird that there is almost no guidance about what to do if you get it. "Stay home" is not really recovery advice. Should you stay in bed or is it better to move around? Drink plenty or less? Eat or don't eat? Likewise, are there actually things people could do to prepare better for getting it - dietary, exercise, sleep, bla bla?

torydeathdrug · 20/06/2020 20:09

I think Germany (& some other places in Italy) took the approach that if people can be monitored and treated at home rather than in hospital then that is better (obviously a proportion of people absolutely need to be admitted). Germany had medics going to out monitor people at home.

BakewellTarts · 20/06/2020 20:10

I think a lot of the homecare advice is keep hydrated. Take painkillers if you need them. For most this is enough.

HesterShaw1 · 20/06/2020 20:12

There were way too many adverbs in my last post

torydeathdrug · 20/06/2020 20:14

I think it will take years before it's all unpicked and anything like a 'best approach' is established. The Global Death Ranks are unhelpful for so many reasons ... and that's not being a government apologist, just being realistic that it is all complex and multi-factorial.

We had Covid at the start of lockdown. Take paracetamol and drink plenty of fluids. Get early nights.

If you are like us, your temperature will rise and fall and it will last longer than a cold or flu would.

CruCru · 20/06/2020 20:19

At some point, people were saying not to take an anti inflammatory (so no ibuprofen) but I can’t remember why.

HesterShaw1 · 20/06/2020 20:21

CruCru don't you remember? It's because everyone knew that there were four Irish students in Cork who were fit and well who had been taking NSAIDs for sports injuries and they sadly died.

didn't happen

CruCru · 20/06/2020 20:23

Ahhhhh, that must be it.

It was a bit of a weird time, we were sick (but not seriously), trying to homeschool our children and sort out home deliveries (because we were self isolating) while the world went completely insane.

BakewellTarts · 20/06/2020 20:23

@CruCru the French medicine regulator got excited about 1 study suggesting a link. No evidence in subsequent studies and I believe a form of Inbuprrofen is now a treatment.

CruCru · 20/06/2020 20:24

Fair enough.

Stuff, nonsense and rumours from France. Now debunked and there was something recently about ibuprofen being used in certain clinical settings being advantageous
thenightsky · 20/06/2020 20:28

Found you! I've been panicking you'd been deleted.

Drivingdownthe101 · 20/06/2020 20:29

CruCru we were all ill at the beginning of lockdown (well, a couple of weeks before really).
DH went to London with work and was in an office with what turned out to be a confirmed case. 5 days later he woke up with a temperature and was sick. He had a fever and fatigue for 3 days (couldn’t get out of bed) and a residual cough.
2 days later (which was the day we were told to self isolate for symptoms) DD2 came home from school with a high temp and a cough. Over the course of the next week the remaining three of us developed a cough, no temperature. I was then ill with a cough, painful chest and shortness of breath for the next 3-4 weeks. 4 weeks in I was sent for a chest X-ray which was clear, bar a cracked rib from all the coughing! My symptoms didn’t clear up completely for 10 weeks.
I wish they’d roll out these antibody tests.

CruCru · 20/06/2020 20:31

So do I!

Drivingdownthe101 · 20/06/2020 20:34

Looking back on it all it was a weird time! We were self isolating before schools closed/lock down. We were pretty sure we had it but no way of knowing. We were trying to do some homeschooling but in hindsight I really was quite ill and whatever I had dragged on for a long time. The world was going insane around us. And we had no toilet roll Grin.

MinesaPinot · 20/06/2020 20:37

And I've found you again!

Littlebelina · 20/06/2020 20:44

This might be the reason it came up in the first place but 🍆 are in this week's Aldi's super six.

If only I could face queuing at a different supermarket

Orangeblossom78 · 20/06/2020 20:45

I have heard Lombardy in past years had been overwhelmed with flu cases in it's elderly population.

DH was in that area before Christmas, with work he said it had very bad air pollution like a smog and very industrial too.

Funny thing today seem outside Waitrose in the queue. Elderly man propped up with his bike against the wall randomly reading a book, waiting for the rain to pass i suppose. Next to the queue.

A security person came up and asked him are you shopping here today? (very polite) the man replies 'no' and turns back to his book

A polite silence. Confused Man continues to read as the queue politely moves around him!

BogRollBOGOF · 20/06/2020 20:45

I'm going to see my mum! Grin
This week is the anniversary of my dad's sad not-sad (pre-covid sad) death. So I've announced that I'm going to the grave, would you like me to pass by?
I told DS2 and he briefly lit up in a beaming smile before imposing his new-normal scowl back on his face Grin

Over 4 months since I've seen her and he hasn't seen her since Christmas day as she was very poorly around Christmas time.

Checking in. Love the latest title Grin

Who mentioned courgette curry?? It's made me think of these amazing Sri Lankan curry kits a friend of a friend sells. Alas, I wasn't an actual friend so couldn't get a freebie, but was friendly enough to feel a bit weird buying them from her. Don't know why, the rulez of social anxiety don't work that way. The curries were fantastic though. Yum.

Feeling a bit more positive today in the Dinghy household. There are tentative plans to book a holiday in a holiday park type place for September (shhhh, don't tell them, it's somewhere that doesn't want disease ridden visitors). I desperately need something to plan and look forward to so clinging to that atm.

Institutkarite · 20/06/2020 20:58

I've followed all the threads but I don't post much because I'm not in the U.K. at the moment. I'm in Portugal and have been since early March. It's been great to see all the anti dementor posts here.Jourdin11 you're most definitely not a dementor. I wish you well for the future.
For those of you missing the sea, this photo is for you. We're allowed out here and life is slowly getting back to normal.
It will happen for you, eventually.
