Anyone about who's knowledgeable about x-boxes?

It's all plugged in properly but won't connect to the tv. On the odd occasion the tv does recognise it's there, the xbox screen looks like green snow, then vanishes quickly to the tv screen that tells me there's no HDMI input.

The HDMI wire is a new one.

There's a new icon on the left corner of the HDMI2 box on the tv (where the xbox is plugged in), that looks like a little remote control. No idea where it's come from or what it's for.

Any suggestions to sort it out wouls be very much appreciated as I've precisely NO idea what I'm doing/looking at or for Confused

Go to YouTube and type in HDMI cable Xbox issues there are loads of help videos. I think you have a dodgy cable.

lucysmam · 19/06/2020 21:14

@Valkadin thank you, I'll see what I can find on there

have you managed to fix it? it might just be a loose connection in the HDMI port... try a different HDMI port if there's a second on your TV, that usually fixes issues I have!

lucysmam · 19/06/2020 21:32

@weirdtweetsthrowaway nope . The girls' dad managed to get into some of it's menus through the fuzz and changed one of it's settings ... can't even get into it now.

So, looks like no more xbox in this house for now.

This sounds like a loose or faulty hdmi cable.

Basically the hdmi just connects it to the tv before you can then eg connect the Xbox to WiFi, sign in etc.

So, check the hdmi port and make sure

1 its definitely a hdmi port - do they have symbols to show in/out on them in the Xbox and tv - have you checked you've used the right ports?
2 try the second port
3 use the tv remote to select hdmi 1 etc

We had this issue when I used a hdmi splitter - had to bin it in the end, even the expensive one led to a fuzzy screen

c3pu · 19/06/2020 21:40

Try turning the cable around, and try another cable.

lucysmam · 19/06/2020 21:50

Well, the xbox is on...the tv knows it's there...but there's no picture from the xbox Confused. I'm baffled and confused & Youtubing made it worse Grin 🤷‍♀️

It sounds like a loose connection. Or dodgy cable.

What can you see on the screen and can you check that both ends are in the right port and firmly attached

KillingOksana · 19/06/2020 21:59

Have you tried a new HDMI cable. The most likely thing is that the HDMI is faulty.

lucysmam · 19/06/2020 22:05

Both ends are where they should be. We've tried three HDMI cables but put the original one back now.

When you click through the menu from Sky (hdmi1), xbox(hdmi2), hdmi3 it shows the xbox in the little hdmi box; but then when you select the xbox it's just a blank screen.

The girl's dad is going to see if he can find somewhere in town that'll have a look at it tomorrow (or whenever but he's going to ring and see where's open/how we go about getting it looked at, at least).

Make sure that both your TV and console are turned on and your TV's input signal is HDMI. Check that the HDMI cable connection to your console and TV is secure. Make sure that the HDMI cable is connected to the console's “out to TV” port. Cold boot your console (hold the power button for 10 seconds).

Just copied that as its what I've been trying to say but in proper language

SouthWestmom · 19/06/2020 22:14

Do you mean the tv remote not the sky remote?

SouthWestmom · 19/06/2020 22:15

Like this?

Our hdmi is virgin then hdmi is Xbox but it doesn't say this

Anyone about who's knowledgeable about x-boxes?
lucysmam · 19/06/2020 22:31

Yes, mine are listed in little boxes along the bottom.

So it shows:

Hdmi 1
Sky

Hdmi2
Xbox one

Hdmi3

And then whatever other options there are but I've never paid any attention to them.

We usually work everything through the Sky remote (I say we; I don't actually use it often & can't remember how to bring the menu up to take a picture -it's usually already on Sky by the time I think about flicking through the channels 🤷‍♀️).

It's all switched off for now; I'm sure either the girls or their dad will have another bash at working it out tomorrow.

Thank you for trying, I appreciate it :)

Have you switched the Xbox on with its controller?

SouthWestmom · 19/06/2020 22:35

Ah I'm sorry you've got stuck. It does sound like something fixable. I don't really get how sky changes the input but maybe it's like a universal remote? We have virgin and a separate tv remote.

Good luck. I hate software tech stuff on the computer but can usually work tv connections and hardware issues. I'm sure it's simple!

burnoutbabe · 19/06/2020 22:41

With the hdmi you can rename it but that does not mean it's actually the Xbox on that port, TVs are not that clever

So assuming you have sky plugged in and working? I'd try the sky hdmi cable in the exact same tv socket. If it doesn't work then i think it's the Xbox.

lucysmam · 19/06/2020 22:42

It's like it's picture's got lost somewhere. I seem to recall having a similar issue with something a while (maybe a few years) ago where the picture for one thing, and sound for another, had got crossed over. I just can't remember any more than that. I think this might be a similar problem but am not really good with tech to work it out (but can troubleshoot all sorts of phone related issues!).

@titchy yep, that's how they usually turn it on. Everything's turning on, it's just impossible to see what it's doing once you select the HDMI input for it.
