Box dye madness.

Hey everyone.

I dyed my hair “dark chocolate” and it’s gone black. Is it possible to lighten it? And if so, how? I’ve read about clarifying shampoos, bicarbonate or soda and vitamin c tablets, but wondering if they actually work?

I was originally blonde (bleached) but couldn’t be bothered bleaching it all the time so just thought I’d pop a dye on and let it grow out, now I look like I’m a wanna be punk. /:

If anyone has any tips, I’d be so grateful.

Thank you. (:

You could try washing it with washing up liquid. Never get dark brown anything, it always goes near black.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 19/06/2020 19:29

Head and shoulders the original shampoo will help ease the colour

You can always use colour remover it might take it a few shades lighter

I have darkish brown hair and use light golden brown as it always turns out much darker

Bodgedboxdye · 19/06/2020 19:33

@EnthusiasmIsDisturbed will that ruin my hair (the colour remover)

But I’ll try both suggestions.

Thank you. @IhateBoswell I’ll have to remember that for next time. ):

I would say any type of clarifying shampoo will lighten it. Initially dyed is always really deep and dark in colour though. I use vosene a lot because my head itches like mad with many shampoos except it and my colour washes out in intensity really quickly. I've had mine a huge range of natural and fashion colours.

Minai · 19/06/2020 19:41

It might get lighter after a few washes. I dyed mine mid brown from blonde a month ago and it has gone a lot lighter, more of a light brown dark blonde now

biggiebiggiebiggie · 19/06/2020 19:42

Baby shampoo mixed with baking soda is good for removing semi permanent dye, it might be worth a try on permanent as well.

DonaldJTrumpet · 19/06/2020 19:45

Just wash it twice each day. It will fade quick with bleach underneath. I used the Schwarzkopf tempting chocolate a few months ago on bleach and it was very very dark for two weeks. Also doesn't help that it's such a contrast. Probably looks darker than it actually is.

Bodgedboxdye · 19/06/2020 19:50

I’m pale too so it looks terrible.

I honestly want to give all these a try right now.

I tend to wash my hair everyday so I’m hoping it makes a difference.

@DonaldJTrumpet I think that’s what it is, it was blonde and now it’s soo dark. My haircut looks so weird with it too. /:

If it helps, I am deathly pale too. I went a shade or two darker on the foundation until it looked more natural.

Is it still a shock each time you look in the mirror? 😂

Bodgedboxdye · 19/06/2020 20:10

@DonaldJTrumpet yep, and because of my hairstyle (short undercut) I look like a boy. /:

I’m debating whether to fake tan but don’t know if I can warrant even going to such lengths whilst being in lockdown. Grin

Head and Shoulders is good for this.

Bodgedboxdye · 19/06/2020 20:27

I washed twice with head and shoulders which produced a lovely purple lather. Also washed with another clarifying shampoo and conditioned.

It’s still so dark, gunna repeat all steps tomorrow. So what can I expect? A lighter dark?

OP posts:
DonaldJTrumpet · 19/06/2020 21:01

A lighter dark and after two months it'll go orange where it was blonde in some kind of odd balayage. Yay!

DonaldJTrumpet · 19/06/2020 21:02

And yes. When it was first done I also cut my hair really short to bring it back to life. I looked like this...

DonaldJTrumpet · 19/06/2020 21:02

But paler.

Bodgedboxdye · 19/06/2020 21:10

Lol. All the colours.

Head and shoulders with crushed vitamin c tablets

reinacorriendo · 19/06/2020 21:14

I can go for lightest brown and it goes black...why? Head and shoulders strips it out well

TimeWastingButFun · 19/06/2020 21:15

Just wash it loads until you can get to the salon again, I would never try to dye your own hair, it's so drying and can react with other products unless you're a professional and know how to counteract it.

thisusernameismine · 19/06/2020 21:16

Please can we have a pic Grin

Bodgedboxdye · 19/06/2020 21:20

@TimeWastingButFun I dyed it as I wasn’t wanting to do anything else to it, I’d been bleaching it but my roots were showing after a day and it was just tiresome having to re-do it.

I didn’t expect it to go mega dark, I was hoping for my natural colour (quite dark brown, but not black)

@CatToddlerUprising Thank you, I’ve seen this recommended a lot, what can I expect from it? (:

OP posts:
Bodgedboxdye · 19/06/2020 21:23

I’ve added a pic, not sure if you can actually see it or I’ve added it properly.

It will lighten after a few washes op, you had been bleaching it do the colour has taken deeply but the damage the bleach has done means the colour won't hold that well.

Don't do anything until you have washed it for a week then reassess.

Some of these suggestions could really fuck up the condition of your hair.

DonaldJTrumpet · 19/06/2020 21:27

Oh wow that is short.

I'm feeling ruby rose vibes tho. She's pale and brown!
