What job can a portly graduate of 50 go straight into training for?

Just that. Am 50 and need to go back to work. I have a disability which affects my spine so standing around or lots of driving are out.

Degree from a good university, just a long time ago.

Any ideas? Was in sales for yonks before kids.

No idea, but could you consider taking a postgrad degree to launch/relaunch your career?

You'd probably be eligible for a Government Postgraduate Loan (as long as properly accredited institution). Wonderful opportunity to move into or develop something you're interested in, gain a fresh qualification, make contacts ...

Both degree and apprenticeship courses are attracting more and more people in middle age. Entry requirements are very flexible, they won't care much about the exact subject of your first degree, much more about what you've done that qualifies you for your chosen course. And you could have a lot of fun.

That sounds interesting - I toyed with the idea of a Masters for a bit but I’d only really considered stuff I knew I’d enjoy, which doesn’t actually lead to any employment really.

Where do I start to find more vocationally focussed courses?

Reading with interest to see what is out there for retraining.

Bookkeeping? Accountancy?

Have you considered something in the civil service?

One of the Back to Work schemes that the big corporates run?

Not sure if you are a woman, but actually returners programmes run for men and women.

Not sure this is any help, but marking exams ? i'm sure its impossible to get into this job sector, always assumed its reserved for oxford dons .
I know a lady who does a few days a week teaching and testing exams for some long term jobseekers who wish to gain a retail skills diploma in 2 days - thou it all seems a bit pointless to me .But she gets well paid by the council to babysit some idiots and tidy up their cv .
Nightwatch cctv screens involves sitting about alot - but pay crap and its horrid boring work,10pm to 6am - i lasted a week .
