Are dyson fans worth the money?!

DH thinks they’re hugely overpriced. But it’s going to be really hot next week and I’m tempted to invest as I struggle to sleep in hot weather. (I keep a fan on all through the year in fact - have a ground floor central London bedroom and can’t keep the window open. My current fan is a bit rubbish and very old.)

Are they worth the money? Anyone here have one? Is there a better brand?

We can see this thread is a few years old so some of the guidance may be out of date, but we’ve recently updated our best tower fan and best desk fan pages with plenty of Mumsnetter-approved recommendations, including advice on whether a Dyson is the right pick for you. We hope it helps.

I think they’re worth it from a cleaning point of view. They’re so much easier to clean than traditional fans. They’re also better from a safety point of view if you have long haired children or dogs. There are no rotating blades.

VinoOlive · 19/06/2020 16:02

No.

They're good heaters but that's no use next week!

TooTiredTodayOk · 19/06/2020 16:03

If you want something to actually cool the air you need something that vents out like this.

RememberTheSunnierDays · 19/06/2020 16:08

I disagree. I have the tall white fan, just a fan, not a humidifier and it’s so much better than the ones I’ve had in the past. I bought when pregnant last summer as the old one was bobbins (I was being sick with the heat), this one was amazing. Really cool straight away and I’d recommend it.

MondeoFan · 19/06/2020 16:08

Nope useless we had one at work (small shop) it was terrible

MintyJones · 19/06/2020 16:13

Yes. We have 3 so must like them! My DS has a cool me purifying fan by his bed, we have the whole room air purifying fan in our room and my DD has the hot + cool fan in hers

They work for us.

Appuskidu · 19/06/2020 16:19

I asked this question a few weeks ago and watched quite a lot of reviews on you tube. The consensus was that they were v expensive, and no quieter or better than cheap fans.

I actually bought this in the end which is bloody amazing. It’s the quietest fan I’ve even seen!

GemmaFoster · 19/06/2020 16:19

Yes. Did a lot of research into this when I moved into a house where the sun shines on bedrooms. They are expensive but other fans are crap. And you have the timer function & loads more.

Fallenbehind · 19/06/2020 16:29

Ooh great tip, Appuskidu it’s much cheaper!

Thank you @Appuskidu will be ordering the pedestal version!

We ordered a dyson pure cool and sent it back after a week because it was not worth £500. Yes the app and being able to control the fan from your phone is very clever and it's interesting to see the pollution levels....but it didn't cool any better than a normal powerful fan and at that price I'd expect it to actually cool as opposed to looking cool!

TheTeenageYears · 19/06/2020 20:11

I did a bit of googling on this last week and the consensus seemed to be that for not much more you could buy an air conditioning unit which would actually cool the air.

jay55 · 19/06/2020 20:13

I've the hot/cold pure and the only good thing about the cooling is being able to set it to come on when I'm on my way home.
For sleeping, my old fashioned cheap pedestal fan does a far better job.

ChequerBoard · 19/06/2020 20:21

I have just bought a pure cool Dyson fan for the bedroom and also a much cheaper Electriq knock-off version of the same product for the lounge.

The Dyson build quality is much superior and it has the ability to link to app for control from your phone (if only it worked reliably). It also has a 'night' mode which is lovely and quiet, but naff all good for actually cooking the room.

As a working fan, the cheaper knock-off version is actually better. It looks OK too and has a remote control. I am going to buy another for the kitchen so it must be pretty good.

Theyweretheworstoftimes · 19/06/2020 20:38

Yes. Stayed in Singapore with no A/c the dyson fan was the only reason I didn't sweat to death

BertiesLanding · 19/06/2020 20:43

No, they're bloody useless if you compare them to a £12 fan I bought from John Lewis which is powerful enough to tear shreds off the Dyson.

I have the same one, it’s extremely quiet, even on a high setting. It’s quite large though!

MintyJones · 19/06/2020 21:45

People seem to get confused about the difference between a dyson fan and an air con unit. A fan is just that.. it blows air. Air con will actually cool the air.

Don't get a dyson thinking it'll lower the temperature of a room. It won't, it's not designed to do that.

We also have an air con unit and although it chills the room brilliantly, we can't sleep with it on as it's too noisy.

TheTeenageYears · 19/06/2020 21:45

@Appuskidu is it good from a cooling perspective as well as really quiet? I've now looked at their air conditioners and at £300 i'm just wondering if it's better to go with AC rather than £140 for the pedestal version of the fan.

Nixen · 19/06/2020 21:50

I really like our Dyson fan, but we did only pay £100 for it because I have a contact at dyson and used their staff discount. It was worth that, that’s for sure!

PickledWilly · 19/06/2020 21:51

We have recently bought a dyson fan and think it is very good. Quiet, powerful and looks nice

mynameiscalypso · 19/06/2020 21:54

DH bought two a couple of weeks ago after extensive research. I don't think they do much personally and I prefer to actually feel a cool breeze. They're also much noisier than I expected (was on a video call at the other end of a long room and had to turn the fan off as the other person could hear it). DH has also become somewhat obsessed with the air quality which is tedious.

Toddlerteaplease · 19/06/2020 21:54

We've got them at work. Useless.
