So I used to have a habit of buying old books, usually of books I've already read but I've pretty much got rid of all of them now, donating them back to charity shops. Anyway DS asked me earlier why I don't throw this book away as its really old. Its hand written by the author (Tobias Matthay) on the cover and has a signed postcard and handwritten musical layout thingy tucked inside. So I think the book was owned originally by the author who then sent it on to someone he knew as he has written inside the book too. It got me thinking that I never could make out what the postcard said, and thought this is something only mumsnet can solve 😁

I can read part of the 3rd line
"I may be at Dinner- but"

So can you work out any of it, I'd love to finally know?

AgnesNaismith · 19/06/2020 14:53

Last 4 words - ‘you off in time’

ChangeThePassword · 19/06/2020 14:54

The last line ends 'you off in time'. But I'm not sure how it starts!

HollowTalk · 19/06/2020 14:55

Here goes...

I think I could ??? on Tuesday? next week about the time you mention… I may be at dinner but if you’ll send a message ?? I’ll try and see you about 8 or a little before so as to ? you off in time.

HollowTalk · 19/06/2020 14:56

Is the word 'downstairs' after 'message'?

ChangeThePassword · 19/06/2020 14:57

I think you might be right Hollowtalk!

HollowTalk · 19/06/2020 14:57

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 19/06/2020 14:58

I think I could ? a ? (hearing?) in on Tuesday next week about the time you mention . I may be at dinner - but if you'll send a message downstairs, I'll try to see you about 8 or a little before - so as to ? you off in time.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 19/06/2020 15:02

Great find btw, I wonder if it's worth anything?

Knittedfairies · 19/06/2020 15:06

I ? could you a hearing in on Tuesday next about the time you mention. I may be at dinner, but if you send a message downstairs, I'll try to see you at 8 or a little before, so as to get you off in time.

Samtsirch · 19/06/2020 15:08

There was a documentary on channel 5 years ago about second hand bookshop owners who deliberately put messages / notes / signatures into old books to try to increase their value, using calligraphy pens, aged paper etc and including key facts about the author for authenticity.
Hopefully this is not the case, but just be aware.

AdventureCode · 19/06/2020 15:12

I don't think it's interesting enough to fake to be honest. The postcard is genuine in that it's got an old stamp and has been posted. The address on the postcard matches the name inside the book.
And they didn't increase its value by selling to me for a £1. Grin

@AdventureCode
Oh yes, that does look authentic.
It is definitely interesting !
I would keep hold of it and maybe get it valued at some point.

diddl · 19/06/2020 15:29

I think I could join in hearing it on Friday(?) next week about the time you mention.

I may be at dinner, but if you'll send a message downstairs, I'll try to see you about 8 or a little before so as to get you off in time.

Samtsirch · 19/06/2020 15:32

Or research the author and their life story.
I am a bit of an obsessive when it comes to old books and now my interest is sparked 😁
Maybe arranging a piano lesson, or a secret love affair under the guise of having music lessons.
( Also have a very active imagination 😁).

Looked again & think yes, Tuesday.
