Congratulations, be proud of yourself! Getting an interview is brilliant.

What's the job?

Windyatthebeach · 19/06/2020 12:22

You do know sahm is the hardest job though??
Congratulations on your new adventure!

Clotho55 · 19/06/2020 12:29

Wishing you the very best of luck, OP; I'm a SAHM at the moment, will be looking for part-time work later in the year. Sending positive thoughts your way

NoRoomInBed · 19/06/2020 14:22

Thank you everyone. It's working in a bank 😊 anyone have tips for a phone interview?

OP posts:
mylittlesandwich · 19/06/2020 14:29

Phone interviews can be good because you can have notes sitting out. I usually make sure I'm sitting in a proper chair, sounds daft but it makes me sit up straight so I sound more professional. I've worked in a bank, they're usually looking for someone who can get on with people, my work always said you can teach someone about products but having a good relationship with customers is very valuable. Also maybe have a little look at the bank and see what else they do, I worked for virgin money and knew about their grow £5 scheme before I interviewed and they liked that lol.

StrangeAddiction · 19/06/2020 15:00

Write a list of their services/products and a bit about each of them. Maybe how the bank came about in the first place. How many branches/employees etc - just anything you can find out about them so do your research! Lots of notes on yourself, hobbies and interests etc.

Have a glass of water next to you just in case your mouth goes dry or start getting a tickle in your throat (like normally happens to me).

Maybe get fully dressed up as though it was a face to face interview and like a pp says, sit on a dining chair to feel more formal.

Try and do the interview away from your family so you have peace and quiet with no interruptions.

Relax, sound enthusiast and knowledgeable about the position you're applying for and I'm sure you'll do great! Good luck.

Great tips. I've started on my notes just now. I'm so excited. Im also going to have the job description up in case they ask what I know about the position. I haven't told OH that if I get it I'll be earning more than him. That's going to be fun.

something2say · 19/06/2020 15:58

Congratulations!!!!

My tips...
Write down why you want the job.
Why would you be good at it?
What transferable skills do you have?
Research the job spec and consider each item. Can you do it? Can you give examples of similar things you've done?

Many interviews these days are 'give us an example of when you...' type things.

The more prep, the better. You'll be great.

NoRoomInBed · 19/06/2020 16:32

See because I've not had a job before I'm worried when they ask certain things. I made it clear I've not had a "real" job on my CV so hopefully will understand

Unexpected question. I was asked was "what can you not do ?" Come up with something just in case.
I can't speak French. Or
I can't do shorthand,
I can't stay awake past midnight.
Something that you don't need for the job, because anything you do need you are willing to learn.
"What can you bring to this job?" You are a mum so
You are calm, you are good at problem solving and you can multi task.

DrDavidBanner · 19/06/2020 17:21

Good tips. I've worked in a bank, be prepared for them to ask you questions about things like security and customer confidentiality. That kind of thing.

I have found this site really helpful for interview advise in the past www.reed.co.uk/career-advice/interview-techniques/

Its great that you've had such a quick response, Good luck Flowers

NoRoomInBed · 19/06/2020 17:46

Thank you everyone 😊 I'm just so shocked. I sent it off thinking I'll not even get a reply

All my bendy bits are crossed for you lass.

Hoppinggreen · 19/06/2020 17:59

Find out what they are looking for so you can tailor your answers around that
So have a list and as you demonstrate that competency/example tick it off
Approach it like a f2f interview, be smart (no suit obvs) but don’t just wear trackies with hair piled in a scrunchie

Smallsteps88 · 19/06/2020 18:02

Good luck!!

They’ll probably ask you to describe a time when you were in a stressful situation/facing a challenging situation and how you resolved it. Have a think about a few scenarios you can talk about.

Soozikinzii · 19/06/2020 18:17

Good luck Thanks

mylittlesandwich · 19/06/2020 18:35

Also meeting a target, most banks I know have sales targets so that's something else you could think of an example for.

IHateCoronavirus · 19/06/2020 18:40

Fantastic news, no advice but the best of luck! Star

getdownonit · 19/06/2020 18:42

For each item on the job description, you need an example of when you demonstrated that skill. Even if you haven't had a formal job, you should be able to think of one from 'real life'.

So 'Able to negotiate and manage difficult situations' could be when you had to assist Auntie Mabel to move into a care home. You took care of discussions with the manager, made sure all arrangements were in place before the move, assisted with organising the care home funding and successfully moved her in. End result was a calm and easy process and both care home and AM were happy with the outcome.

Smallsteps88 · 19/06/2020 18:44

Targets will be a big part of your job. There’ll be lots of meetings, huddles, emails, cascades about targets. Your brain will start think in terms of how every part of your job impacts your targets.

ShopTattsyrup · 19/06/2020 19:02

Loads of great advice above!
A tip someone once gave me for a phone interview was to prop a picture of someone up infront of you so you have "someone to talk to" - to stop you potentially rambling or getting distracted by things around you. May help if you're feeling nervous!

Good luck!
