Anyone here who lives / has lived in Japan / speaks Japanese? Cake related!

Visited last year and are so many of these cakes I put on about a stone but it was totally worth it. I even liked them so much I took a picture.

Desperately trying to find some or get some shipped (they're THAT good) but I have no idea what they're actually called (they're that tasty I just kept calling them Angels 😂) can anyone tell me from the picture or knowledge what they're actually called?

Thank you!

Double cream pan?

JorisBonson · 19/06/2020 10:53

Close - there's no custard in it, just cream, and it has a cross on the top.

(The double cream pan sounds AMAZING though)

Then maybe just a type of cream pan? There are so many varieties I'm not sure if they all have specific names.

Sorry I'm not Japanese nor do I speak much of it, but a big fan Japanese food! (and Japanese convenience stores!)

Hopefully someone more helpful will come along!

I don’t know, but if you’re in London there’s a Japanese bakery in Shepherds Bush, I bet they’d know. Or contact a local Japanese bakery if you have one? Or tweet them?

I can’t read the first line of the wrapper because of the angle (and, to be fair, because my Japanese is a bit shit these days 😊), but the second line is “cream sando”, ie cream sandwich.

Following. I got obsessed with mochi when I was in Japan.

Worriedteacher1 · 19/06/2020 16:05

They’re called dorayaki, I think.

Thank you! That's not one of the things I've googled!

I miss Japanese bakeries, they are such a delight. Makes the likes of Greggs look so crap!

Aknifewith16blades · 19/06/2020 17:07

I think the first line is 'daburu' in katakana, meaning double.

So double cream sando

You're amazing! I found it!

Still can't buy them anywhere but I'm a step closer 😂

The Japan Centre does mail order:
www.japancentre.com/en/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&term=Dorayaki

Lots of different fillings, not sure if they have the exact one you're after :)

Thank you - I managed to get some Suntory Malts from there for DP's birthday 🤤

Hurray! Half the reason I'm currently learning Japanese is to be able to read the food labels in the konbini's next time I visit.

If you like Japanese food, there are companies that do subscription boxes of snacks.

And I highly recommend this book that tells you lots about Japanese food www.amazon.co.uk/Pretty-Good-Number-One-American-ebook/dp/B00C9T9X2Q?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

DearTeddyRobinson · 19/06/2020 18:29

The writing is a bit hard to read but it's some kind of custard flavour. God I miss japan. Even the bakery stuff in the 7-11 was ace Smile

Lightsabre · 19/06/2020 18:31

There was a recent Paul Hollywood trip to Japan series and he visited a bakery where they made these. I can't remember the name though!

Winkywoop · 19/06/2020 19:27

I was pretty close with my guess then!
