Any jewellers about?!

Or anyone that knows what the current market is like for selling diamonds? I went just before lockdown and the jeweller said I would get a better price in a couple of months but I obviously the wold is now a different place! I wonder if their value would have decreased. I was quoted around £1000 for a pair of diamond earrings and an engagement ring.

Diamond price is piss poor.

Sounds good. I got offered £150 for a ring that cost £2,200 new

The price was BC (before Covid!)

I’m not sure how long I can wait - this is the trouble. If the market for diamonds is bad and unlikely to recover soon I will just have to take whatever I’m offered I think Sad

Anyone about this evening?

You're honestly not going to get any decent prices at this moment in time. Every bullion merchant is sitting on stock. The only diamonds that are shifting at the moment are the £10k plus grouping.

The resale price for diamonds is shocking, I think people should be more aware when making their original investment.

Did you get a few different quotes BC or was it just one place you went to?

I got a couple but not much interest as they had stock left over from Christmas. I wonder if I’d be better trying eBay in the run up to Christmas... I don’t think I have any ‘documents’ though.

I left abusive DH end of last year. I have no financial security, no savings, nothing. He is paying maintenance but continually threatens to stop so indeed something in pot.

He is also demanding them back (the ring is my engagement ring and the earrings were a Christmas gift. If I get rid then it cuts that argument off. Actually, eBay probably not an option in case he sees the ad

I'd just tell him you sold them- then he won't be looking for them.

The run up to xmas is generally a better time for selling jewellery- I wouldn't sell on local buy and sell pages though as I've heard of a few jewellers absolutely scalping folk in this way.

RandomMess · 19/06/2020 21:57

They were gifts he is entitled to them back!

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 19/06/2020 22:06

I think random meant to type 'isnt' entitled to them back.

If the ring was a family ring (ie: his grandmothers or whatever) I'd probably return it- but if it's got no story behind it beyond it being bought for you then it's yours.

RandomMess · 19/06/2020 22:20

Yes, isn't!!!

Twixes · 19/06/2020 22:22

I've no idea of carat size, cut, colour so it's impossible to say.

Consider assigning to auction. Fellows are getting good prices at the moment.

Twixes · 19/06/2020 22:22

*consigning to auction

AnaisAna · 19/06/2020 22:46

How would I do that Twixes?

Not a family ring - bought specifically for me. It’s the only thing (along with the earrings) that I own that has a value to it. It’s my safety net (or start of!)

I don't think jewellers are doing well (unsurprisingly). My DH just bought me a ring for my 40th birthday, it was one I had been 'watching' for a while and they knocked a huge £950 off the price in their sale. I think a lot are trying to shift stock so might not be looking to buy.

I sold my old engagement and wedding rungs on eBay. It was for much less than they cost (I got about £800 each but the engagement ring was bought for more than double that) but still not bad. I did have all the certificates though and they were good diamonds and platinum.
