How would you prove you are a single parent?

Hey everyone, I am carrying out some research and need some advice how would you or do you prove you are a single parent if a company or organisations asks you this question?

could you prove through a copy of your council tax bill deduction ( single person 25% ) or child tax credits code or copy of your letter?

has anyone been through or done this before and what did you have to do?

For example - you can prove your a student with student ID and can prove your a nurse through blue card identification....

Thank you so much

I suppose it would be tax credits award notice as it names who has been awarded and what doesn't it?

(It's been a while as DS is grown)

Why would you need to prove that though?

Love51 · 18/06/2020 21:41

Depends who wants to know and why, surely? The only people I can think of who need to are tax credits and student loans.

And there are differences in how people define the 'single' part of single parent.

Not all single parent families get tax credits or other benefits, though.

Tax credits award/universal credits? Electoral roll? Let someone look in the laundry basket for dirty man washing? Grin

I’m a single parent- we don’t all get tax credits! Why would I need t9 prove it?

Pipandmum · 18/06/2020 21:46

I have never been asked to prove it. But my husband's death certificate I suppose would do the job.

Macon · 18/06/2020 21:48

Why would you need to prove this? I am a single parent, and have never had to prove it to anyone...

MsJaneAusten · 18/06/2020 21:49

I’ve only had to do this at a supermarket, and the fact that a small child was with me and only me seemed to be the only proof I needed. I can’t think of anywhere else I would need to ‘prove’ it?

A few years back I attended events which offered reduced admission rates for single parents. I contacted them and explained that I was a single parent, but had no way of proving it. They accepted that they hadn’t thought that through and simply took me at my word.

Council tax bill wouldn't work. My husband gets the reduction as I am a student so therefore not eligible to pay.

I had to send copies of my divorce paperwork to Student Finance last year so that my DD could get the maximum maintenance loan.

Zaphodsotherhead · 18/06/2020 22:10

I was asked by Student Finance to prove I was a single parent so my children could get their loans. I wasn't actually divorced (my XH had run off and was uncontactable) so they took my letter of 25% CT discount as proof I was single. But this was a few years ago now, they've all left Uni since.
