I had an interview yesterday for a new role with my current employer which I really wanted but I didn't do well at the interview and didn't get it. I know I can do the role, but it won't come up again for a while, and I do want to do something different so need to think about other options. There are two possibilities and I'm not sure which I would prefer - it's not as simple as applying for both as one is open for applications now and the other one will be coming up at some point soon but I'm not sure when
Job 1 - same role as I applied for unsuccessfully but at a different place. It is a promotion, so higher salary, but it isn't a full time role which is an issue. I could potentially request full time though, with the additional hours being in a different role which they would almost certainly need people to do, and which requires and additional qualification, which I have. It is a longer commute than now but perfectly doable. Advantage is that I think I would do better at interview with people I don't know. Mon-Fri 9-5 type role. Open for applications now, will close soon.
Job 2 - same level as I am at now but due to the job role and additional on call payments, would probably end up earning the same as job 1, or possibly more. Internal move, so would be able to stay with my current lovely colleagues, and no/very short commute. A new role being created so chance to shape a new service which would look good on my CV in future and as the service develops there might be potential for a higher level role to be created (same level as job 1) which I would be in a good position to apply for. Mainly Mon-Fri but very flexible, able to manage own workload and hours, but would also be on call frequently at nights and weekends. Not being advertised yet but hopefully soon. Multiple roles will be available so higher chance of success.
If you were me would you apply now for job 1, for the immediate career progression, and have job 2 as a back up, or decide to stay in the current workplace where I am generally happy and wait for job 2 which is more of a lateral move although it could help career progression in the future?
