Found on our back step a few minutes ago, slightly dessicated

It looks like a cross between a spider and a moth, with a shiny red body and unusually-shaped wings...DH was quite unnerved by it and insisted I ask MN what the hell it is

It's one of the bigger moths?
Hawk moths can be huge!!

Could be a cockchafer? They're a big beetle.

Wings are the wrong shape for cockchafer or hawkmoth!

someone somewhere is worried their wonderful gorgeous husband didn't fly home last night.

Tbh, I'd probably sell up and move,I thought I knew a bit about insects, but that shiny , eyebally cutie has got me baffled.

Weird suggestion, and I can't tell from the photo, but is it a spider (underneath) attempting to eat or wrap a moth, both deceased? The legs do look very like a spider's.
Or a white-tipped black moth (though not usual for a UK identification).

What size is it?

Not sure but once I saw something similar in flight. Was sitting by the coast outside a cafe. A huge flying spider flew round me and another woman on the next table for about 20 seconds. It was literally like a very large spider with wings (not a crane fly, this was like a proper thick spider and wasn’t light and spindly plus flew more like a wasp than a crane fly)
When it flew off time and the other woman gave each other horrified looks as if to say wtf was that!!?
I tried to research it but have never found what it might be. This was around 4 years ago and I remember it so well so you can see how unnerving that was!

Mothman

I looks like a half eaten section of some kind of hawk moth to me 🤷🏻‍♀️

We had this fly into our garden , with wings out it was like a jumbo jet !!!! Scared shite out of us until ddog promptly jumped up and caught it !! Then it was spat out like this!
It’s a stag beetle and apparently extinct in some parts of country!!
