Can I ask how you scent your bathroom?

Sorry to ask.

All the air freshers and reed diffusers I've tried smell very toilet-y. Most are completely overpowering and artificial. They have all been from supermarkets.

I just want a nice, subtle background scent when you walk in, is that too much to ask for?

Reed diffusers in laundry type scents from TK maxx usually
Wax tarts

CountFosco · 17/06/2020 17:52

Another permanently open window here in the main bathroom. In the bathroom that only has a skylight we use the extractor fan and the cleaner cleans it regularly. Bicarbonate of soda is good for more persistent smells.

TrickyKid · 17/06/2020 17:53

I clean it regularly and have the window open most of the time but I do keep a supply of handmade soaps in a box with no lid so that gives off a subtle smell.

Frauhubert · 17/06/2020 17:54

I have a window in the bathroom for starters, so that’s already a bonus!
At the moment I have the white company Seychelles diffuser which is quite subtle, and not very bathroomy like. I avoid like the plague anything ‘pine’ or ‘ocean’ as they always smell ‘like a toilet’. Then I have a Jo Malone Red Roses room spray, which I use in the toilet as I can’t stand the smell (it was a gift) and the toilet is a good place to get rid of it Confused

gluteustothemaximus · 17/06/2020 17:56

Diffuser. Got one in there at the moment, Lemongrass and Ginger (from amazon, luxx creations co) and it's lovely. Smells good all the time now. Definitely not toilety.

whichteaareyou · 17/06/2020 17:56

I have some white company Seychelles shells which smell lovely!

dudsville · 17/06/2020 17:57

I enjoy a pretty candle but I don't buy them and don't light them if I'm given one. I don't buy diffusers but will use them if I'm given them. I find the presence of a nice bar soap can be really pleasant though generally, and like most on here I also just go for "clean" with an open window. I did get a replace item instead of the toilet bleach that I'd asked for a few weeks back and it smells very nice for a cleaner. If you like a scented bathroom you might try to different toilet cleaners - some ecover might be nice???

Just an open window, and a general flash cleaning spray .
Someone gave me one of those plug in things, for another room. It was a vanilla scent thing. It is horrible, and makes my eyes water, and have a coughing fit, god know's what's in them.

It seems that people have to have fragrant homes all the time, according to the TV Ads, where a woman opens the door for a friend to walk in, and they both stand there, looking around the room, and smiling and nodding, at the Wonderful aroma all over, and so perfect home, perfect hostess, all fresh and clean .

Bargainhuntbore · 17/06/2020 18:02

I like the aldi reeds but they dont really last or i just get used to the smell.

I use an air freshener and open the window. Or light a candle

Pieceofpurplesky · 17/06/2020 18:02

As many others Fresh air and bleach. If I am having visitors I light a candle in the window

Bargainhuntbore · 17/06/2020 18:03

Oh Dunelm have a nice selection of reeds and candles. Love the cherry blossom one.

KingOfDogShite · 17/06/2020 18:04

I open the window.

peaceanddove · 17/06/2020 18:05

Method shower spray after every shower always leaves our bathroom smelling gorgeous for the rest of the day.

SerenityNowwwww · 17/06/2020 18:05

I have an electric air freshener spray. There’s a nice smell of cucumber and something (just a light fresh smell).

I have a neighbour who seems to boil liver and manure every few days 🤢

DrDavidBanner · 17/06/2020 18:05

Well now the boy is home he does a good job of scenting it Envy

I don't like the smell of plug ins or room spray, I try to keep the window when we're home, I put a bleach tab in the cystern and give the bathroom a good clean a couple of times a week.

ChristmasCarcass · 17/06/2020 18:08

If my bathroom smelled of anything, I would take that as an indication I needed to clean it, tbh. Obviously there’s a bit of a bleach smell straight after you clean the toilet, but I can’t see how covering that with pot pourri would help - just open the window/run the fan until it dissipates.

MrsMoastyToasty · 17/06/2020 18:08

Creme de toe jam.
Eau de farts.
A tincture of teenage boy.

SurreyHillsGirl · 17/06/2020 18:08

Those saying they keep it clean, I'm sure the OP is aware that not cleaning her bathroom will make it smell gross Grin

I use scented candles, Jo Malone or White Company (someone mentioned Sea Shells upthread - gorgeous for bathrooms) and I have an oil burner where I burn neroli oil, beautiful scent. Always have a decent room spray by the loo (NOT a supermarket cheapy, they give me headaches) and an essential for unwanted odours - a bottle of lemongrass oil - put a few drops down the loo - it neutralises 'loo' smells Grin

QuestionableMouse · 17/06/2020 18:08

I'm not a fan of overpowering scents but don't mind something if it's not super strong.

I make soap so have various essential oils in the house. A few drops of them on some cotton wool makes the bathroom smell fresh for ages. I'm currently using a citrus blend which just smells fresh.

TiddlestheCat · 17/06/2020 18:08

It's probably better not to ask!

SurreyHillsGirl · 17/06/2020 18:11

Seychelles not sea shells !

Iwouldbecomplex · 17/06/2020 18:11

I don't like using any artificial scents / diffusers because the chemicals in them can be harmful. I refil my Neom diffusers with homemade refills - almond oil mixed with essential oils. Much cheaper, organic and smell lovely, plus the Neom diffuser bottles still look nice. There are loads of suggestions online for aromatherapy blends you can make, so for example I do one for the bedroom that helps sleep

321youreback · 17/06/2020 18:12

Just been in mine and I think my teenage boy has 'scented it' for me 🥴

SurreyHillsGirl · 17/06/2020 18:12

A few drops of them on some cotton wool makes the bathroom smell fresh for ages

Such a good idea, I am stealing it.

Baaaahhhhh · 17/06/2020 18:13

We keep the windows open here, but other than that the bathroom generally smells of dove soap, a selection of male and female body sprays, the occassional lush bath bomb.

If DH does a really smelly pooh, there is a random room spray in there, but no-one likes sprays, so the door is closed and the window opened as wide as can be.
