How many of you have been converted to KPop by your kids?

DD was an ardent BTS fan for about a year, then she left them for another set of KPop virtual boyfriends and I'm side-eyeing the pile of BTS albums and plushies I bought her for Christmas.

But she got me into KPop too and I love it! It's the pop cheesefest I've been missing for two decades. My absolute faves are Red Velvet and Dreamcatcher, and maybe Blackpink if I like their next comeback, but I listen to almost everything.

There are threads for some odd things on this site, is there one for KPop Mums? I'm sure I can't be the only one here... Blush

I have never heard of either of these?? But I'm off to investigate on Spotify lol! Are they from the uk??

DopamineHits · 16/06/2020 23:46

No, it's South Korea, they have their own pop industry.

Here's a mini playlist, if links will work

Red Velvet
Bad Boy
Psycho
Red Flavour

Dreamcatcher
Scream
Chase Me
Sahara

Ah, ok, maybe I'm the only one.

I've seen older fans on twitter, but KPop twitter scares me Grin

I'll get back to my playlists then...

Yes I love it.
Kids introduced me to it a few years ago

Shortfeet · 17/06/2020 00:25

There’s a sinister underside it though

Shortfeet · 17/06/2020 00:26

To it though

ActuallyItsEugene · 17/06/2020 11:59

I can't use twitter much anymore because of the fan accounts posting irritating videos of incredibly young looking singers in the replies to threads with no relevance to KPOP.

I'm not surprised there's a sinister underside @Shortfeet

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/06/2020 12:01

What is the sinister underside?
I'm not into Kpop, but I do know of BTS.

Shortfeet · 18/06/2020 06:31

@IHaveBrilloHair
The recruiting and retaining process for the young kpop stars is relentless.
There have been several deaths by suicides

IHaveBrilloHair · 18/06/2020 11:49

Gosh, I had no idea.

unstableunicorn · 18/06/2020 12:21

Definitely not the only one! Love watching the music videos too, the choreography is usually amazing to watch. Also according to my mum my little sister's got the whole household hooked on kdramas, much to my dad's confusion Grin

foamrolling · 18/06/2020 12:23

Ugh no. I have 2 kids into it and I've only heard one song I like out of the many many songs /groups they've subjected me to.

TheVanguardSix · 18/06/2020 12:25

It's a very abusive industry.

Badmemorieshouse · 18/06/2020 19:09

Never heard of this, will have to google!

Casino218 · 18/06/2020 19:33

No but I'm 53 and my DD (14) has been getting me to Tik Tok dance to some of the music with her. It's quite a laugh.

BeforeIPutOnMyMakeup · 18/06/2020 19:42

There was a suicide yesterday.

I watch a lot of YouTube videos so have ended up listening and watching K-pop. (I've also watched some live.) However the dark side to it plus what's happened in S. Korean clubs horrifies and disgusts me so has completely turned me off.

IHaveBrilloHair · 18/06/2020 20:12

I asked my 18year old DD abput it earlier.
She said it's like a battery chicken farm but they churn out teenaged boys and then treat them like puppets.
Shock

IHaveBrilloHair · 18/06/2020 20:14

I saw at the last BTS concert, even after buying the tickets, they then sold a wand thingy for £25 that you had to queue up for, and it didn't even include batteries.
Ffs.

MulticolourMophead · 18/06/2020 20:20

My DD has been into KPop since around 2011. Like many others, she started off via BTS, and listens to loads more. She's told me all about how abusive the Korean pop industry is, these kids (girls as well) are in manufactured bands. The performers get all sorts of lessons, and start off their careers in debt to the companies for the costs associated with this.

And yes, some have committed suicide due to the relentless pressure.

I don't listen myself, DD knows that I would far rather listen to metal, especially Rammstein. We just respect each other's music choices.

sunkengalleon · 24/06/2020 21:03

Bloody love kpop. Got into it when my daughter was ill and we would watch music videos together to get her through the day. It's what I listen to in the car and out running now, especially love Seventeen. Self producing, writing and choreo kings.

vanillandhoney · 24/06/2020 21:50

No way.

Even if I liked the music, the entire industry is tucked.
